a few questions

Modeling Subjects Armor

  1. I recently started modeling german armor again, and purchased the tamiya Marder III kit. I was looking through some old magazines I had, and saw some models done by Brian Wells in “FSM Presents Modeling the Second World War”. There are 2 pictures of a revamp he did from an Italeri Marder III kit, showing a scratch built interior, transmission, and an almost completely rebuilt exterior. I was wondering where or how does someone get the reference material for such a project? I have so enjoyed the tamiya kit that I will surely build it again, and I think I see some spots that I can improve on.

  2. I saw an article in a different publication of a build on a tank, and saw that the modeler used a mix of squadron white putty, paint, and brush bristles to model mud. I was wondering should I thin this mixture, and if so what with? And are there any other suggestions for modeling realistic looking mud?

Couple of quick answers to your questions.
1.) References, references, references. Look anywhere and everywhere for pictures of the tanks you are going to build. Seeing as you are on the internet, there is a wealth of info out there…digging it up can be fun though. Here’s a good one to start with AFV News www.activevr.com/afv/ This site has lots of references to view and tons of links. I also highly recommend the purchase of any of George’s scale drawings…good quality, low price, and some obscure choices to boot.
2.) Want to make mud…check out Ricky Chin’s mud making secrets in the photo gallery of the Rocky Mountain Model Club. www.rockymountainmodelclub.com/main.htm
Otherwise experiment with color, white glue, putty, baking soda, organic materials…just about anything. Try it on an old kit or part that you have lying around. Don’t forget to try pastels (chalk) to give it that dusty look.

thanks shermanfeak, that first sight was a real help. i managed to find all kinds of stuff, especially a great sight on tiger tanks. http://tiger1.info/ theres the link for those of you who are interested. By the way, I never did find that article on mud making secrets, but it was definitely a sight worth checking out.

You must be in the Calgary area…I believe there are 3 clubs operating in that vicinity including an A.M.P.S. affiliate in Bragg Creek (or there abouts). Just check some of the local hobby stores…they’ll be able to fill you in on clubs.
