A Color Identification Question.

I’m embarking on an F-84E built, and while assembling my photo references, came upon this series of color cockpit photos. It appears to me that the ejection seat is painted a faded Zinc Chromate Primer yellow, with the usual Chromate Green interior. Do my eyes deceive me about the seat color?

ZC Yellow Primer was not supposed to be used in cockpits. The seat looks interior green to my eye, the lighter shaded coming from a combination of paint fade and camera flash.

Looks like zinc chromate to me…

I think is FS229. [:)]

Zinc Chromate Green, or Zinc Chromate Primer Yellow?

Got those same photos – F-84 Thunderjet in Detail, p.43. There is no doubt the seat is a different color than the rest of the cockpit. Page 42 shows this even better. Interesting there is nothing in the captions that mentions this. As for naming the colors, what’s the point? I’d just match what I see in the pictures…if I believed what I see in the pictures.

Primer yellow…

The Museum of the USAF at Dayton did a restoration on a F-84 several years ago. There are a few photos of that work in their restoration facility pages. I’ve attached a photo showing a little interior work around the ailerons and flaps. That may not help much, but it does have a couple of patches of color. It also gives you an idea of the quality of photography that the USAF restoration site contains. There are photos of many different projects. They can be very helpful on some modeling projects. Rick

The color of the ejection seat and the color in the flap area of the above pic look awfully close to my eye. So I guess I`m saying the seat looks like faded yellow ZC.

Many thanks for the helpful input. It does indeed appear that the stories of massive surpluses of Zinc Chromate Primer Yellow paint within the Republic factory is true, and the seat was indeed primer yellow on this example.

Cheers.

Just to stir the pot a bit… Put me in the “Interior Green” camp… Frankly, it’s a toss-up, since the seats are gonna be the color that the seat manufacturer used, rather than the aircraft manufacturer… However, I believe Republic built their own seats, at least for some of the F-84 series… Can’t say for sure about the E-models, but I know the F-models were painted green or grey, depending on the block…
