A Challenging Project ...

I stopped at the hobby store today to get some styrene pieces, and while I was there I picked up a model of an F4E that was on sale. I don’t remember the tail number, but it has shark’s tooth decals so it will fit right in with my P-40 and F-105.

The box colors are the standard 4-color SEA camo and gray bottom (I think it’s gray, haven’t really looked yet). The challenging part is that the model is 1/144 scale[:0] Guess I’ll see what the Omni and my ancient eyes and hands are capable of 'cause I’m going to try to freehand the camo[:p]

go for it scott, by the looks of the 105 ya got going, it should be a piece of cake. the only handicap i can think of is the omni 4000, if you had the hp-cs i wouldn’t be in doubt![;)] later.

This thing is about 3" from wing tip to wing tip. The canopy is about 1/4" wide. It was only $5 so I couldn’t resist giving it a try. I’m the same way about airplanes with a shark mouth as you are about Mustangs.

I don’t know about that … I’ve heard some bad things about Iwatas. Oh, wait, that was Aztek I heard the bad things about. I always get Aztek and Iwata mixed up.

I wouldn’t attempt a 1/144 scale F-4 freehand with either of those airbrushes.
Now my Sotar would probably do it. [:D][;)]

Mike

hey, i like the shark mouth birds myself scott. how many pieces does a 1/144 scale model have roughly? i can’t stand anything under 1/48 and i have 20/20 vision. i cant imagine trying to paint up one those birds!! later.

Scott,

Did you buy a resin cockpit for it? [:o)] [(-D]

Mike

now that would be a nightmare eh mike!!!

Especially the seatbelts and buckles. [;)]

Mike

Can you say “tweezerpult”

Fine … I’ll send it to you to paint [:p]

I didn’t count them, but there are two little sprues. Maybe 50 parts total. It has seats and a canopy but that’s all there is to the cockpit.

Not yet. I haven’t had time to look for one. I may wind up having to scratchbuild one[;)]

My tweezers aren’t even that small!

OK, so there are only 31 parts [:)]

Scott,

I suggest a freehand mural on the nose also. It would add a nice touch. [;)]
Wow! That thing is small! [:0]
Don’t drop anything from that kit or the carpet monster will keep them forever. [:D]

Mike

Actually a SEA paint job could be done on a 1/144 scale plane. Just roll silly putty REALLY SMALL [:D]

I did an Academy 1/144 F-16 for my first “get my feet wet” model last month…and I used my #*$(#$ Aztek on it…

Not the best by far, but it can be done…

It looks pretty good to me. Not sure mine will turn out that well, but at least an F-4 is a little bigger than an F-16 so I’ve got more room to work with [:)]

The kit was garbage, but for $3 I couldn’t complain. I ended up hand painting many of the markings with a 10/0 brush and a magnifying glass… But hey, it was fun. Had to cut and remake the wingtip launchers, as the kit ones resembled MK 82 bombs on the wingtips…used .015" strip styrene…

Scott…
considering your work you’ve presented on your website…the F-4 will no doubt be equallly as exquisite…

…just squint them old eyes

Kind of the same deal here. I saw it, it was $5, I figured what the heck. It will be fun to see if I can pull off something that resembles. If not, no big deal. I ordered a 1/32 scale Phantom this morning [:)]

I already have to do that and use a magnifier lamp for 1/32 scale stuff! Guess I can get a couple more magnifiers and stack them on top of each other.

that is one small kit scott!! i don’t know my friend, with 75 year old eyes, you better be careful!![:P] you may want to be fitted for a straight jacket just in case things dont work out for ya!![;)] good luck grandpa. later.

A couple of decades short of 75, but sometimes I feel that old [:)] Don’ tknow if I can do anything with it or not, but what the hekc it will be fun and no real loss if I screw it up.

1/144 kits can be alot of fun. I have done quite a few of them. Academy/Minicraft has a wide selection of kits, although they are not that detailed. I found a couple ‘bargins’ at a kit collectors show. Among them were two F-14 Tomcats by LS. They turned out to be really detailed for their size w/ lots of decals to really dress it up. Cockpits?? What cockpits, so far they don’t even exist in the kits that I’ve seen.
