a member of my Legion Post who served in Europe during and after WW2 asked me if i knew anything about a British vehical he saw there. he describes it as a two man light armored vehical , one man facing forward and one facing rear, with a light gun mounted in either a fixed or rotating turret between them. he said it was wheeled and not tracked. it was supposed to be able to go forward or backward by switching control between the two crewmen. anybody have a clue as to what this might be?[%-)]
As a matter of fact, I have seen photos of such a vehicle, and seen a description of it. Unfortunately, I don’t remember where I saw that info, or remember what kind of vehicle it is. I’ll start digging to see if I can refind it.

there is a public library in the same building as my school, they have books that have alot of ww2 vehicles in them, they are: german tanks of wwii, and british and american tanks of wwii. they have almost every tank and prototype. i have some spare time on tuesday during school, i will look it up for you.

The British had lots of makeshift armored cars in England at the time of the Battle of Britian. The closest I can find to what you describe is a makeshift vehicle called a Beaverette. The Mk III version had a turret with Bren machine gun(s) and they were mainly used for Airfield defense. Think it had a 2-3 man crew but don’t see any info about it being able to be driven in reverse by the other person. There are a few kits out of this in 1/72 and 1/76 as well as smaller wargame scales. Think I have seen one in 35th scale by Cromwell or Accurate Armor as well. I remember watching a movie many years ago that showed the british home gaurd modifiing a steel bathtub. Turned it upside down, mounted it on wheels and added a machine gun to it probably just for the movie but it funny non the less If only I could remember the name of the movie

Yes, everybody knows a bathtub is amongst the best armored of all home ‘appliances’. The heavily enameled cast iron can withstand up to a shot from a .22 caliber long rifle and can be inverted for Saturday night enjoyment. To me it makes perfect sense… now where’s my teapot… I mean, Helmet!?

i want to the library, got a book out about armoured cars of ww1 and 2. went to the great britian section, and there pages of british armoured cars. there are alot commonwealth vehicles. and as mentioned before there were alot of homeland defence modifications, where basicly they got anything with 4 wheels and moved, and put metal and mgs on them. I will need morer info on this NEW MEX, was it an mg or anti tank/assult/artillery/ gun on it? none of them seem to have a place to drive from either side.
t3488g, talking to Sarge he seems to think it had a small caliber gun on it, like mabey a 2 pounder, if there was one. he says it made a poping sound, not like the sound of a machine gun. plus the front and rear armor was sloped.i’m also thinking he said the engine was mid mounted???[%-)] i’ll see if i can pry anything more from his memory and post it for ya. thanks folks.

That being able to go forward and backwards really confuses me, can’t find anything that seems like that would be possible. you got me stumped
Hi folks, didn’t mean to be gone for so long but had major computer problems[banghead] had to deal with 872 backed up e-mails. got some more info from Sarge on that little beast he saw. it was in 1948 he saw this. it was a detachment of Brits that were in Palistine since before the war and were on their way home and got stuck doing manuvers in Europe before they could get the rest of the way home and they were bringing this thing back with them that they used in Palistine .thanks once again for any help
