Here’s one for you . Find a good paper Model of your favorite Aircraft and or Ship , Building , whatever . Now use it to make this object out of plastic ! C,mon You very talented modelers can make this happen ! Shoot you’ve got the pattern right there and a lot of stuff you can use stretched sprue and strip for .
Just think , a full plastic model built basically the paper(Card ) model way .You’d be surprised how little materials you need . Some .010 and .020 Plastic sheet . Carbon paper , A small ball end embosser and scissors .
You know where this is going . How many of you have thought about that gorgeous model at the show that surprised everyone because it was paper ! Do the same in plastic ! Believe me there’s a whole lot bigger choice in 1/250 and 1/200 than you will believe .
There’s even smaller scales and don’t forget if you want larger there’s always model rail-road scales as well . T.B.
Nah, I believe I’ll just find a paper model of my favourite aircraft and build it out of paper. What’s the point of converting it? Paper models are nice, maybe with the exception of some fine details that I will replace with something scratchbuilt, and that will do it.
Pawel , You know as well as I that to some , if it ain’t plastic it ain’t real . Let’s give them a break . I am trying to get them to at least pick up a paper model .Why , well , in the hope that after they have done the plastic thing , they will look at the ModelarZ or Schreiber or Wilemshaven kit and decide to build it . For just the challenge alone .
Once the bug bites , and I hope strongly , they will find a whole new world out there instead of one narrow type . Remember , my friend , I build in wood ( all Scratch and Hand Carved ),Paper , Plastic and Found Items . I like them all . Plus I think it’s easier the put P.E. on a card model than plastic anyway .
I found , some years ago a ship site that even lets you buy aftermarket rails , ladders and stuff for ships in heavier , laser cut paper too ! They even have some ships ( Sail ) that you plank with heavy card stock type paper ! T.B.

I did 3 paper models. All of the Disney Nautilus but different scales. I wanted to see how they shaped up to models of real ships. So I did a 1/178 version to compare with a Revell Lionfish and a 1/200 version to compare with Nichimo 1/200 IXb kit and Aurora U-505 and others like Renwal 1/200 sub kits.

The Revell 1/178 Lionfish was from a “Lot” purchase. I did not build it. The Nichimo 1/200 IXb was also a “Lot” purchase. It was already painted but was missing parts. I scratch-built guns and few other things. I know the hull color is incorrect. The Aurora (Monogram, Revellogram) 1/209 U-505 is mine.

Sorry there’s not much interest. I bet a good number of modelers have built a paper model at some point. There are a bunch of sites that offer free plans. In my case I do intend to try my hand at using the Paper model as a template to make a Plastic model. One of my ideas is to make a plastic model of the USS Salt Lake City using the WAK 1/200 paper kit. Hey, I can dream…
I have to admit that a few years ago, when I 1st got back into modeling I wanted to build a Pre-Dreadnought, but was having trouble finding a kit so I bought a couple paper models. After looking over the paper models I got nervous that they may be a bit beyond my skill level at the time, since I hadn’t built anything in quite awhile, and in the past alot of my building seemed to involve a bit of trial and error. So, I began to wonder if it might be possible to do something maybe a bit like TB suggested, and also maybe with a bit of balsa and tissue type building thrown in.
I never got around to trying such a build though, since I eventually found a copy of the old Potemkin and the newer Kniaz Suvorov plastic kits on line. In addition I have been messing around wih my 3D printer and vinyl cutter machine.
Maybe once I finish up a couple of the builds that I am currently working on, and get some free time though, I may try and experiment around with trying to all these different techniques together and build a mixed 3D printed/balsa/plastic model using one of the paper model booklets that I have as a starting point. I have an old paper model booklet of the Vosper built Libyan Corvette Tobruk that might be a good strting point for such a build, though I have also seen a booklet for a Polish Automobile called the FSO Syrena that also looks kind of interesting too. [:D]
Now I’m thinking about some things. What about a model in metal. like tin or something? I built a Phaser out of balsa but I was recently trying to build another one out of several materials. I got some acrylic rod and brass rod for some of the parts and some tin plate for others. I even found some plate with those holes. My challenge has been the I want to install a high power laser [like those from a DVDR] but haven’t had much success yet. Still have the parts, still missing much of the parts I need.
I actually bought a 3D CAD model of a Syrena off Turbosquid not long ago with the intent of trying to break the model into smaller parts for 3D printing [:)]
