Modelers, I’ve decided to put the A-6 aside and instead start on an F-89J.
My book shows a light to medium grey used in the cockpit. Is this a particular FS number? Where can I get this information on the net?
Thanks.

Wow! No takers at all? I’m thinking it’s either Dark or Light Gull Gray, but I’d like to verify it.
Not real sure Dana… I’ll try to do some checking. I can’t believe that no one knows the answer to this one.
Dark Gull Gray, FS 36231, would be my choice, although Revell calls for Aircraft Gray, FS 36473 in their instruction booklet for the F-89C Scorpion. I think the Revell reference would be too light a shade.
By my photos, Aircraft Gray had too much blue in it. I’m still leaning towards Dark Gull Gray.
Hey Bones;
what I generally do for modern A/C interiors is use Neutral Grey FS 36270 and then use a black wash and that will darken it up to close to the Dk Gull Grey and you don’t have to use a highlighter grey for the dry brush after the wash and the high areas still have the lighter grey and it makes it look more like it’s been used & abused and sun baked
Don’t ask me how I know this but I just finished a Korean war F86 and smeone on this board sounded very authoritative and said flat black. I did mine in flat black and it looks great. You did say 50s.
Sorry for the late response, but I had to gey my reference book back from a friend. The correct gray for 50’s and 60’s aircraft is FS 36473, Flat Aircraft Gray. It is the flat version of FS 16473, ADC Gray.
well, I got bad info then, mine is flat black. Looks good none the less
The Academy indtruction sheet says dark gray, but i figure as long as it’s gray… I did see some reference pics of F-86s on display with Black interors, so you may not be too far off, nsclcctl!! [:)]
Thanks for the response, guys. I actually made a mistake up there. I said that I was leaning towards Dark Gull Gray. Actually, Dark Ghost Gray is what I was leaning towards. I ended up going with that. The pics I have may just be dark pics, but it sure seems to be a close match. Besides, I don’t think my father is going to care too much. [:D]
Thanks again guys.
I asked this question some time back now. thanks for all the responses.
Now, how about the A-6E? Neutral grey maybe?
Lots of colors - What isn’t something else is dark gull gray, but I’d use light gull gray and a wash to get the right effect…
A-6E and F-89 were FS36231 gray in cockpits. I used to crawl around on a wingless F-89 hulk and I can vouch that it is that mandated Cold War 36231. F-86’s cockpit went from green lower/black uppers in early models to all black to this same gray in the Dog and H models. On the subject, when I was working for Combat Jets Flying Museum (defunct, I believe) our F-104D, acquired from Canada via Norwegian Air Force, had proper interior paint. But the gazillionaire owner (very nice young guy) spent hundreds of thousands restoring two F-86’s and an A-4C and they came back from Mojave with front offices painted that F-16 cockpit gray (36320?) The pilots couldn’t understand why I was so anal about getting things like paint schemes right. They laughed at me. When it did get right (not because of me) the A-4 won Best Warbird at Oshkosh. But then, our 104 was in civilian Circus Stripes and our Hawker Hunter -6 was cranberry all over with British roundels and white wheel struts and wells (but proper all-black cockpit). Only a hardcore modeler could get angry or lose sleep over a subject as arcane and, in the end, irrelevant to what’s really important in the world. But that’s me, I guess.
