A-6 intakes

Modelers, I’m having trouble determining the correct color of the inside of the intakes on an A-6E. This aircraft is in the common FS36320 and FS36375. The problem is that this seperation line crosses the intake on the outside. I’m sure the inside was painted one color and then faded into the other. Wasn’t it? How would this work?

Thanks.

It’s white.

White? The pics I have show it grey. I Just don’t know which grey.

I may have misunderstood your question, the intake lips are a contrasting shade of gray and this includes a small part of the interior of the intake but the rest of the intake is white as are the gear wells. That’s not to say every A-6 had white intakes, that’s just what they’re supposed to be.

Ahhh…I stand corrected! In that case, I guess the split line between the greys is carried over into the inside of the intake?

Not that I have seen. In the gray/white scheme this marking was of course red but with low-vis it’s the same gray as the other markings, a contrasting gray color. Here’s a pic of an A-6 without the band on the intake, just the triangle. I can’t distinguish a break in the color but my guess it would not be carried over into the intake, only the base color being used. Keep in mind these a/c were touched up constantly and any color was used any where.

The above museum picture shows the color break on the fuselage but the splitter plate is clearly one color.

This shot from a different squadron shows the intake warning marking and splitter plate in the same color, probably the same as the insignia, darker than the camo, with white intake. You can see how far it wraps around the intake lip.

lips are grey and the internal is a glass white
