Hey everyone,
I’m building the Tamiya A-10 (I’ve put 6 parts together besides the weapons and I can see why everyone hates this kit), and am considering droping the ‘Charcoal Lizzard’ scheme. I’m not sure of its proper name, but what is the correct colour for the ‘Ghost Grey (??)’ scheme?
Hi Will7813 ; I have Academy’s 1/72 scale A-10A in my stash to build the color scheme they call out is FS.36375 Light Ghost Gray and FS.36320 Dark Ghost Gray . The painting instructions also call for a False canopy underneath in FS.36118 Gunship Gray , but this may be optional
Well being a former A-10 Mechanic, here we go first off the wheel wells & door interiors, ladder bay & door interior, gun bay and door interiors are gloss A/C Gray (FS 16440), the NEW MASK (now called Ghost scheme) colors are Dk Ghost Gray FS 36320 & Lt Ghost Gray FS 36375 with a false canopy on the forward lower fuselage under the cockpit is Gunship Gray FS 36118. also most antennas on the plane are now gloss Black even the right main landing gear sponsion’s nose (ADF antenna) is gloss black, the Engine nacelles interior is flat Black with the cowling interior is gloss white and the exhaust tail cone is Lt Ghost Gray FS 36375 (not metallic colored as most people think) and the inside is the metallic color (I’d use Testor’s MM’s Jet Exhaust {it’s the best match)
if you have any questions just drop me a line and I’ll try to get you the answer about the A-10’s
OK, I didn’t realise there was more than one tone of gray, I thought it was a monotone scheme. I’ll use the FSs if I must, but do any Tamiya acyls match up??
YES, thanks Phil. I have been to that site before, but I didn’t see that scheme there (probably just me). I’ll use the Gunze colours because I try to stick to acryl. I’ve got 2 Gunze acryls but haven’t used them yet, is it about the same paint to thinner ratio as Tamiya, 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner??
I haven’t used the Gunze acrylics extensively, but from what I’ve seen, they are thinner than Tamiya’s and can be airbrushed straight out of the bottle, but will benefit from a little thinning.
I’m using gunze acrylics atm and I thin them 50/50 with Isocol. (Isopropyl rubbing alcohol.)
I used to be a huge MM fan but decided to give the Gunze acrlyic a go and haven’t turned back. They are so ‘smooth’ and cover really well. They smell good too.
The only reason I put down th FS #'s is that I didn’t know which paint company you like to buy, Gunze has the FS #'s on their containers like Testors but here in the States, Gunze is a little bit more pricey and not as readily avaible at my LHS’s and I don’t like to buy paint by mail order (Had some bed experiences with having the paint frozen during shipment and the paint went on like garbage) but from what I used in the past I like them, they reminded me of the Humbrol brand type paints they too flow nicely from the airbrush as well as the standard brush but they’re enamal though not acrylic
Whatever, doesn’t really worry me. The only reason I prefer the Gunze is because its Acryl, the only MM readily available over here are the enamels which I prefer to stay away from.
I can understand that, I like Acrylics too but the Polly Scale & Testors are really limited where I shop too. I think most of the people here in the U.S. are still thinking Old School on paints and here Enamals are more abundant over their Acrylic brothern.
Good Luck with the build, Also I’ve seen Squadron has just released in their True Details Line an A-10A resin cockpit set for about $10.00 US, so you might want to use that instead of the basic cockpit in your Tamiya kit
