A-10 1/48 paint help

I have an A-10 RevellMonagram 1/48 scale. I cant choose what color to use on my wheels flatblack or semi gloss black. Dum ?
And if anyone can send me a copy of the instructions by e-mail it would be greatly welcome.[:D][:D]

modelkid,
The wheels on most combat aircraft, including the A-10, are flat black. It reduces the amount of possible reflections or glare from the tires.

thats what i thought cause ive painted them flat on all my other plans they just look different on the pic

The wheels on aircraft arent always flat. A-10 and F-16 wheels are typically gloss when freshly painted. It makes it easier to keep them clean and avoid corrosion problems. Ive got many years tearing them down and building them up for the AF. As the tires wear and the brakes are used there is a certain amount of carbon dust that builds up on the wheels. Hint…if you have fresh tread then it needs a clean wheel. As the tread wears down then the wheel gets proportionatly grubbier.
btw…A-10 wheels are gloss white[;)]

I think he’s asking about tires, could be wrong, tho…

Anyhoo, for the tires, go with flat black.

Doesn’t anyone have instructions for the A-10 kit that he has? He’s been asking for awhile now… [V]

Fade to Black…

I’ve got the instructions for the 1/32 Trumpeter kit. It may help a bit just with locations and stuff… drop a line if you need them.

Hey every body thanks for the help on such stupid question ive painted them and there done.
ill post pic when iam done i did it in gunship grey.

just out of interest

I’ve always found that flat black for tires is too …welll…‘black’ for models

Always preferred a very dark grey color…with a hint of purple…lol
I know…sounds wierd…long ago…humbrol or somebody did a specific tire color…thought it looked much better…anybody else heard of this???

Sven…being an ex-A-10 crew chief…I can tell you for sure the tires are matt

without any doubt

If you look at his original question he clearly asked about the WHEELS…not the tires. I too was an A-10 crew chief and have never seen a gloss tire, but have seen many glossy wheels.

Yeah, but alotta people talk about tires and say “wheels”, so you never know.

Just like alotta people talk about engines and call them “motors”. [}:)]

Either way, the wheels and tires are related and relevant to this thread and he got some helpful feedback and that’s what matters.

Fade to Black…

iam sorry for messing you guys up about the wheel and tire thing i ment the tire.
i pained the inside Anodonic grey

My point exactly on the wheels, (and tires) just trying to be precise. Its in my nature as a technical instructor…[:D]
Glad there are folks out there willing to answer questions when they are asked.

Hey thanks for your help sorry i messed all of you up about the tires and the wheels i ment the tire. I painted the middle inside what ever Anodonic grey.

BTW i foud[8)] my instructions there where on the wall under about two other sets on instructions.

Sven was a cew chief huh??? cool deal…A-10’s???

Modelkid…every A-10 I have ever seen has white wheels and yes Sven they are definately gloss…lol…gotta get the brake dust off somehow…

I too go with the very dark grey tyre (note UK spelling!!) colour (oops). In fact the actual tread portion can be an even lighter shade of grey, due to dust & wear. Go out & look at a few car tyre’s (there we go again wth the spelling). Tyres are only black because a substance called carbon black is added as they are made. Over time, wear and ultraviolet rays tend to make them fade, hence the amount of stuff on the market that will ‘return your car tyres to as new black’ .
I’ve found that some matt black with a few drops of dark gray (or grey) added looks better than just black. Drybrush over the tread with a lighter shade and it makes all the difference.
As for that Humbrol colour, was it coal black?

I believe back in the day it was called tire black

Thanks all
