A-1 Skyraider Kit info requested

I’m thinking about purchasing an A-1 Skyraider kit, but I really don’t know which ones to buy. Prefered in 1/72 or 1/48 scales. I know Monogram used to make one in 1/48 in Vietnam war series (with Tour of Duty picture on the box) and am tempted to buy it.

Is there other kits that you guys would recommend? I’m a novice aircraft model builder, so I am going to build straight OOB.

Thanks for the help!

I haven’t built mine yet, but the Tamiya 1:48 kit looks to be a winner. I’ve read a few reviews and they’ve mostly raved about it, words like: Definitive, Fall-Together, Splendid, Superb, & Well Engineered are used. The only problem I’ve heard is the price.

The Monogram kit you show is over 20 years old, and has the raised panel lines typical of the time, with thick and out of register decals. It’s at least a third of the cost of the Tamiya kit, but by the time you purchase AM decals it may lose some of that low priced charm. That’s not to say it can’t be built into a wonderful model, but it will take a lot more effort to get there!

I have never built the RM kit, but I have built the Tamiya and Italeri kits. I would say go for the Tamiya one, its better all around than the Italeri one!

The Tamiya kit is great. Excelent fit, no build problems and a great set of decals.

If you don;'t want to spend the money on the Tamiya kit right now, the Monogram 1/48 kit is a fun build, at least it was for me. It just doesn’t have as much detail as the Tamiya kit. I though the fit of the parts was pretty good back when I last built one, and it is accurate in shape.

If your decals aren’t any good, let me know and I’ll see what I have in the way of extra sheets. Do you have any particular markings in mind?

Thanks for the info guys! I’ll probably go with Tamiya then.

ikar01,

Thanks for the offer and if the decals that comes with the kit is not good, I’ll take up on your offer. I haven’t really decide which unit markings that I want to go with.
