9-26 UPDATE__US Tanker done?!

I got a Sherman driver, S and T figgie, and a couple from Schnobs, a female Russky for the Pink Princess Panzer build ( I just wanted a female, she happens to be Russian) and a driver for the BA20 build. I had to grind him up pretty good to get him to fit into the cramped quarters. The car is so small, I am going to have to finish the driver and build the cab around him.

And here they are, first a group meeting

And a closer up look at the tank driver, very nice detail on him, I hope to do him justice.

I primed them with Model Master Acryl grey primer, on advice from Schnobs, but I did not get good coverage and had to do several coats.

I will try to get some real painting in a day or so, I want to let the primer set up for at least a day.

Hey Bill,

Figure prep looks good! I like Ivan without the Beetle Baily points on his head gear.

I normally shoot 2-3 very light coats dryng with the hair dryer between coats to get alight even smooth primer coat.

I have found that MM is less chalky then Tamiya for primering figs.

Hmm, I started these guys faces last night, it didn’t go well.

She simply looks bad, she’s soaking in a bit of windex right now, I will start over on her.

Next, driver Ivan, his face suddenly looked thick and messy, I wonder if I rushed a wash on an uncured base coat? I think I will strip him

Lastly, this S and T tanker, the detail is mind blowing, his face came out better than the others, all I’ve done is shadows and highlights, but I seem to have lost the shadows. What do you think, should I strip him? I really want this guy to be special

Well, ket me know, but my inclination is to just start over and get them right

Serioulsy though the paint does look very thick and it might be a good ideal to strip them and take another run at it. I do very light mutliple pale base coats of Cork Brown and Dark Sand like you know. I have found that if I don’t work really hard and keepign evything smooth and light layers things go South of Dixie very quickly!

You can do better I have seen it! Do not get discouraged though my friend we are just starting figures and it wouldn’t be any fun and quite boring if we were good at it with no effort!

Take a look at Karl and take a deep breath and do it again!

The Russian got a chemical peel, she looks young again, and the two guys got a rejuvinating spa day, too, face down in windex, it was like a mob hit or a aTarentino movie.

I didn’t have a toothbrush handy this am, but the paper towel took mos of it off, down to the resin. I should probably do a full strip.

I tihink the 3 coats of base rather than my usual two is what got me, that and the las coat didn’t seem set when I started shadows.

They look ok, but I migh strip them. I know you were addimg more washes, but I’d definately add a little red to the mix. Keep it up!

The paint on these guys was way too thick, I think. So I dunked and scrubbed them. Here’s what they look like now:

Excellent! Much smoother now… A litle red, some brown shadows, and you’ll be in business! And yes, a tanker gets a tanker for his GF!

OK, back to the drawing board, then BACK AGAIN.

This morning, I painted the Russian guy’s face pretty well, then I shaded and highlighted it, and was all set to move on to the hair and then the uniform, BUT I decided the shadow to highlight was too stark, so I mixed up some thin flesh, and BOOM, not thin enough, monotone, totally screwed up.

So I stuffed him back into the windex bath, Amnesty International is now opening an investigation into reports that I have been waterboarding more than any other governing body.

Then, tonight, I went back in. Well, I took my princess to Miley Cyrus and THEN I went into the 108 degree garage, and went toe to toe with Ivan AGAIN.

Here’s what we got, I even triumphantly painted his hair, and YES, that’s a mustache and even s “soul patch,” I got him from Schnobs, he started life as a French driver, so I left his unauthorized facial hair.

Please let me know what you think, as you can see I am willing to start over when I need to

I am anxious to get this guy done so I can continue my BA-20 build, it’s so cramped that I need to build the vehicle around him.

EDIT__ I forgot to add, I showed him to the Princess, she asked “Is that a chef?” THat is exactly what he looks like, so I guess he’s OK so far.

I really like the first pic well done! Your hands must of been shaking from heat exhaustion on the rest of them they are pretty blurry.

Well, honestly, Edmund, I came into the house when I was done and to get the camera, I had shut down the garage and had the fig with me. I took him in the kitchen where the brightest lights are, and found the brightest spot over the sink, but I had to hold him at arm’s length with one hand against the white shutters to get the camera to focus on him, and I had to hold the camera at arm’s length with the other, made for some shaky cam work. Those are the best of about 8 pics I shot. I will get some better ones tonight, i hope to finish him today.

I decided today to step this up, I have a show coming up and so far one Sherman to enter, if I don’t finish this driver guy, the BA20 will never get sone.

Tonight I bucked down and went to town on the driver, got his face, uniform, and boots done, what do you think? I still need to do an umber oil wash, maybe soem pigments, but otherwise he is done

Hint, DO NOT try to paint figures while the family is watching TV, the light is nowhere near strong enough.

THen I decided to finish the face on the tanke driver

The highlights were too sttark, so I hit him with a cadmium red/van dyke brown oil wash, super thin, he got a bit red, so I put a quick base coat on his jacket, just to see what we are going to end up with. This is an S and T figure, the detail is just crazy good, I think I am going to like how he turns out

He was still looking starker in the photos than in real life, so I busted out the blue background to see what he photographs like

i LIKE HOW THE FACE WASH OF RED/BROWN, AGAIN very THIN, TONES DOWN THE ZEBRA EFFECT AND SLIGHLTY darkens the tone.(Sorry about those caps, but I am not typing that again.

I still have to paint his helmet and go to town on his uniform with highlights and shadows, but he’s coming along.

These are figures 5 and 6 for me, by the way.

Today I decided to finish the Tanker, after several false starts.

Here he is after an umber oil wash, the shine is the wahs drying. I’m pretty happy with him and wnated to get pics up. Anything strike anyone as a glaring error? I have to go back and hit a few spots, but I am probably going to seal him up if I don’t hear anything back today.

I had Schnobs preview my pictures, he gave me some grief for my photo quality, so here’s a shot of the photo studio I put together for this series, sorry for the prior crappy pictures.

So here’s the tanker, first oil wash DRIED this time, and I hit his bright helmet with some mig allied green fading pigment to tone it down.

Here he is wondering where the Russian babe went, he has a spot for her

The green really fadede out after the oil dried, here’s how green he was wet:

Very nice! [tup] You might also put him in the loader’s hatch leaning on the MG… Anyway, really nice work! If I may say so, he could use a TINGE of red to the face. A REALLY thin wash. It’d bring a little color to his face, as he looks more like someone that’s been out in the desert fr a decade. Got that leathery face going, but He still looks really good! Just some ideas…
