9/11 aircraft ?s

Hi All:

Ive been wanting to build a tribute to all the 9/11 aircraft, but am not sure what models were used. I know that American Airlines Flight 11 (767) hit the North Tower, United 175 (767) hit the South Tower, United 93 (757) crashed in PA, and AA 755 (757) hit the Pentagon. Did I get this right? What are the N numbers and models for these aircraft?-200s?

I’m thinking of having them “fly” in formation. i would like to build it in 1/200 scale. Where can I find 1/200 757s? Hasegawa makes 767s. Thanks for any info.

Errrrr…um…it’s a nice thought to want to create a tribute, but were I a family member of one of those lost in those tragedies, the thought of a diorama or flying display of the 4 aircraft would be (for me, anyway) an obscene gesture that would be callous beyond belief.
I applaud your desire to create a memorial, but maybe there would be a better way…? Perhaps donating to one of the 9/11 survivors funds, a FDNY fund or a NYPD fund for survivors.
I know I’d rather see that than a diorama of the 4 planes flying in formation.
Please don’t take my words in the wrong way - I certainly mean no offence, and I apologise right now it you see it that way.
Regards…

Well considering I dont think you stated that you wanted to do a diorama of any of the planes crashing into anything, then I think it is fair that you would want to do the planes represented. I think leemitcheltree didnt quite understand your full intentions?

As far as a donation, I am sure that all party’s concerned have been well supported… Its not about that anymore I dont think… Saying that someone cant do something because it would be considered in bad taste, would be like saying to Paul Sr and Paul Jr at Orange County Choppers, that the bike they built in honor of the Fire Fighters was in bad taste, and the bolt that came from the World Trade Center that they put on the gas tank as a complete insult?.. Simply not the case… These people were just happy that someone took the time to remember them?

I for one think that it would be nice for someone to remember the aircraft, and in saying that, the people on board by building the airliner in thier memory!.. I dont think by wanting to do that, you are trying to offend anyone. Who would want to do that?

Chris

hmmm… interesting idea. A tribute certainly, but do you really want to show them flying? I think that detracts from it a bit. That’s just my opinion. Good luck to you!

Hey 7474 if i were to do a build like this i would start buy finding photo’s of the twin towers, the pentagon then scan them and make a decal sheet of them to display as a final tribute to everyone who had lost there lives. P.S. also the names of the NYFD, and port authority

7474;

I can understand that you want to pay tribute to those whose lives where taken on that tragic day in September 2001, it’s like those who paid tribute to the 7 Astronauts who where killed aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger and the 2nd 7 of Columbia, but I think that most people want to know how are you going to pay the tribute, by displaying the 4 767’s on the ramp or in flight and by guessing not in an attitude of the planes just prior to impact, and it would be TASTEFUL if you’d display them with in a airshow static display style with the names of all who parished on that tragic September day, that’s just how I’d do it

Interesting dilemma, and it prompts a few questions, for example, would models of the aircraft involved in 9/11 be different than building a model of the Lusitania, Titanic, Hindenburgh, or the Betty carrying Yamamoto, all tragedies in their own right, but some brought on by acts of aggression/war as opposed to human/design error. Just wondering where one draws the line, without trying to stir the pot…IOW an honest inquiry.

Great point, ruddratt. It’s simply all in the spirit and intent of the modeler.

I’m beginning to think that people are way too full of the media. A man wants to build a few models. He asks about availability of a 757 model and he gets politics?? This is a modeling forum people, you might want to remember that.

These were the aircraft involved:

American Airlines Boeing 767-223ER Manhattan, New York, USA N334AA

United Airlines Boeing 767-222 Manhattan, New York, USA N612UA

American Airlines Boeing 757-223 Washington, D.C., USA N644AA

United Airlines Boeing 757-222 Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA N591UA

I am sure you can find pictures of these aircraft from airliners.net

I agree, what tribute or dishonor or horrifying thing could be some model airplanes on a shelf in the room of a completely unknown guy?

Go for it 7474 and have fun.

Hi:

I’m sorry that I started a debate. I wanted to build this to show how the airplanes where they belong, in the air. I’m dedicating it the UAL pilots that I meet as a kid. My dad, who now is a captain with Continental, started as a 727 pilot for UAL, and was based in Denver. My weekends were spent hanging out flying the sims and talking to pilots at the training center. One of the pilots that I meet, and talked to for a few years was one of the UAL captains. His son went to the high school in the town next to mine. If it wold make you feel better, I will print a special decal with the number of people who’s lives were stolen from them.I’m a pilot my self, and I feel that aircraft belong in the sky, not on ground. I see every ones argument, and am sorry if I offended any body. I hope that I can get every ones grace, but if some one who lost some one, doesn’t want it built, than I’m not going to build it. I did find pics on airliners.net.

I made a model of the columbia with the mission patch on a plague, and sent it to NASA. Didn’t hear any thing back from them. I was too young for the Chalanger, about 5 years old.

Its ok 7474… You dont need to explain yourself… Do it because you want to, and dont worry what others think…

You said if someone who has lost someone in this tragedy has a problem you wont do it. Well I’m gonna have to say not to state it that way. You are entitled to build a memorial in anyway you think is fit, regardless of what others think. I lost a dear friend from college back in the day when I first came to NY. That being said, I have heard of some wierd memorials and reactions to them. While i am not accusing your idea as wierd, I would say it’s not something that will be readily accepted by the genereal public, specially if you’re planning on sending it to NY. These planes are not considered by the general populace here from my experience as a plane, but more as a weapon that leveled an icon of the city and killed thousands. I know that’s how I’d see these planes in the position you’re planning.

Now having said that, I’d have to say that you are passionate about the plane part and that’s cool. There are some wierd ideas of memorials and to be honest many people would like ground zero to be left the way it was when it was hit. It’s a chilling feeling going there specially while it was being cleaned up. The question of these memorials is the concept of people like Trump trying to score a buck off of a tragedy. Regardless, there should be memorials, there’s a need for humaity to grasp what we cannot understand. I just wonder if there’s a better way to go about it? The ide of a decal or something or a placard stating the flight number and the words, “forever in our hearts” or something long those lines will allow the person to see that the crew and passengers of the flights are being memorialised! Do it up man, let’s see what you can do. It’s not like you’re doing something like building them hitting the towers!

Hey,

I think it’s a great idea. I’ve been to the Flight 93 site twice now, and both times it has been a very moving experience. I, too, have thought about modeling at least that plane.

Please let us know how it turns out. Did anyone answer your question about finding the kits you need?

Regards,

9-11 was by far the worst day in the history of the United States. I believe the most important thing is that we never forget what happened that day, or the people who died. That being said, I see nothing wrong with your idea of creating your own “memorial” model collection, in memory and honor of those who died that day. It is better to dedicate a project like that to the memory of those people, than to forget them as time passes on. Every body has there own way of paying tribute to those who were lost. Being a firefighter, everyday I wear a FDNY baseball cap with “09-11-01” embrodered on it as a reminder and tribute to all who perished that day.

There is noting wrong with your idea. Like stated earlier, it’s not like your modeling them hitting the towers. Now that would be warped. It’s your project, do what you feel is necessary. Maybe you’re doing this as a way to heal. Hey, 9/11 still affects me and how I think even today. We shouldn’t forget that day and use it as a reminder of why our troops are overseas preventing such measures from occuring on our shores again.

I agree with all, just make it tasteful, and enjoy yourself. I would like to see what you come up with.[:)]

If the logic of some of the above commentators is followed to its conclusion then the building of a model of a German ME-109, or a Tiger Tank, or the Bismark, is to pay tribute to Naziism and espouse the Nazi philosophy. I am sure that there are some poeple that would find a model of a German aircraft, or a Japanese aircraft, to be distastful. There may be modelers that build models that are intended to evoke feelings from the viewers, but for the most part modelers just build models.

Build your airline models, but be prepared to accept comments from veiwers who may have negative feelings about what your work represents. Think about it this way. Would you display a model of an ME-109 or a Tigar tank with the Nazi insignia at the Hollocost Memorial? The answer to that would most likely depend on the context of the display. The great thinkers tell us that words and works of art are very powerful influences. They can trigger very powerful responses. Food for thought.

  1. I say go for it! Your idea sounds like a good one. If we all worried about what reactions our models would invoke in others, we wouldn’t be building say military models for instance.

Personally German equipment doesn’t crank my tractor the least, others just love the stuff. To each their own.

So build on and remember in your own way.

My 2 cents worth.
