72cuda, I’ve been collecting ladder-door and nose art for the past couple of years now and I have basic info on more of my art like, tail numbers and base location but, I feel I’m missing a big part of it by not having the history of the art itself.
I have started trying to get this information and could use your help in getting the word out to your KC unit on what I’m trying to do. below is the history of a couple of art-works I have been able to get already and will give you a good idea of what I’m trying to do…
…could they please take the time to email and give me the info? Also if they have art they would like to see on my site they can send it to me at Hogpen13@aol.com along with any info they have on it.
That sounds great man!! If you could do that and get as much info on the art as you can I would be happy to send you a 30th Anniverisary A-10 coin for your trouble. The coins are due in the first of March and are a HOT item in the A-10 community! If you haven’t seen the design here it is below, the GAU-8A barrel will be rasied and the Hog side in full color!!
Good idea Mike and someone is already on top of it! The webmaster of Warthog Territory ( www.a-10.org ) is working to have some made, they will be a pocket tee-shirt with the Avenger coin side on the pocket and the Hog in full color glory on the back, I will post here when they are avalible
Hehe Mike, I guess I don’t know you guys/gals well enough to have gottin’ that airbrush joke! [^]
I messed-up when filling out my profile! [:I] For the record I am a guy and I am married (for the moment) but, I guess in todays world I could have been a girl with a wife!! [;)][:o)]
No problem Dice. I don’t think I stated it in the right way to be understood anyhow. [;)]
Haha. You can always go back and change it by clicking on the ‘Profile’ link at the top of the forum page and editing the information there. [:D]
By the way, I like the photos you have on your web site of the artwork inside the A-10 access panels. These guys are getting better than they were in the WWII era.
Some of that artwork is excellent.
Yea Mike I changed it in my profile, thanks for the tip! I love colecting the Ladder-door art and I’m in the process of trying to get historys on all of them, look what I found on the Miss Behavin…
Hey Dice;
Sorry for not getting back sooner was getting my stuff out of storage all weekend, found out that some Skumbag broke into my lot and stole my rollaway tool box with tools & all my camping gear, the good news is that they left most of my modeling stuff, but back to the subject
I’ll be headed for work on tues and I’ll that the ole pix machine with me and get some shots for ya’s
Thanks 72cuda looking forward to seeing your unit’s door! Sorry to hear about your “stuff” man…there are A-holes everywhere!!
Mike, as you pointed-out the crews get their inspirations from a number of places like Playboy, album covers, and historic nose art. As far as them being airbrushed most are but, some are drawn and painted by hand with brushes. It comes down to if they have the money and someone in the area with the skill to do the work they want.
A few lucky ones has the help of a professional like MR. Michael Dooney who donates his skills to the 104th Fighter Wing’s A-10s…
I never knew that they hired civilian artists to paint on military aircraft. Interesting.
If you would like to see some really talented artists check these three out:
WOW nice Mike, I will have to take the time to look closer when I have a chance! Yea, normaly the Crew Chief and pilot will pick a design and the next time the jet rolls into phase (takes a couple of weeks to do a phase inspection) the CC will remove the door (only held on by one wire in the hinge) and take it to a local artist to have the work done. Some units are lucky enough to have a person in the unit who can do the work.
If you look on my site you will see a number of jets from the Connecticut ANG who has a person called “JC” who has done a number of doors in his unit. He always puts JC somewhere in the art like in the one below…
Hey Dice;
You might have one of our jets there that I wanted you to have the door pix of , it’s the one with the Hawg’s head and it has Borg implants, or it might be at the Reserves Depot site at Barksdale AFB, tell me if it’s there, if not then I’ll get it for Ya, just yell if it’s not there
Also I was wondering if the moded Hawgs (A-10C’s) do they have the LITENING II & III capabilities on both #3 & #9 weapon stations or just #9’s, and are they carrying the glass cockpits
The only “Borg” style door art I have is this one with Pory Pig…
Is this the one you are talking about? If not give me a tail # and I can find out where the jet is.
The A-10C will have the ability to carry LITENING, LITENING ER/ AT, and the new SNIPER pod on stations 2 & 10. Yes they will all have two 5X7 MFDs, HOTAS, and a up-front controler along with other “minor” cockpit mods and JDAM/WCMD capibilities.
Well that isn’t the door it’ll have just a Razorbacks face with the same implants as Patrick Stewart’s was in the series when he was La-Quitas,
and cool it’s about time those upgrades are installed instead of having the locals do it, the LITENING II modes on our planes was a pain except we where in the middle of doing the exterior lighting TCTO at the same time so the routing throught the slat areas done at the same time
72cuda, I found the Cyborg jet you are talking about here at Hill AFB, it’s sitting in a hanger with the wing off. The tail number is 79-0201 and I will get a photo of the door this week sometime, thanks for the heads-up.
Hey Dice;
You beet me to the punch, I was going to give you the tail # today, Also check out 79-091’s door too ithink there is something on her’s too but can’t remember what
I’ve been doing B1-B nose art for about 9 years now. I think I’ve done 37 on the B1’s, a FB-111, B-29, some Canadian trainer, and 2 P-51’s in the works. 2 BOB’s just did a decal sheet with 3 of my nose arts.
