5th Canadian AD

I’ve got a ref photo of the 5th Canadian Armored division on parade in Europe in 1945. All of the tanks have extra track blocks hanging all over them. I can see what’s holding them on the front slope, but I can’t tell how they are staying on the hull and turret flanks. Can anyone direct me to a link or recommend a ref that may clear this up? [:I]

I have wondered the same thing about other tanks. Not only tracks but wheels and other misc. items. I just assumed there was something on the tank that was made to hold it on that cant be seen.

Quite often the tracks themselves were welded directly to the side of the hull / turret.

Thanks gents, it looked like the blocks were welded on, but I didn’t think that would be so. Makes it really hard to use them for repairs in a pinch, but…

Most of the tracks that you see welded onto Shermans were not there for spares, they were welded on for additional armour effect.
