406th FG 9th AF WW2 Help

Hello all,

It has been awhile since I have been around the forums, but I couldn’t think of a better group of people to turn to when I needed some help. What I am looking for is somewhat out of the ordinary (or maybe it isn’t) but I thought I would see what all of you wonderful people could come up with.

What I am looking for is any and all information on the 406th Fighter Group of the 9th Air Force during World War 2. This includes information on the fighter squadrons as well as the support units, especially the support units…the 390th Service Squadron especially.

My grandfather was one of the original cadre of this unit in England and I currently have his campaign book (which I am going to scan and put up on a web site in the near future…it has some decent shots of 406th A/C in it).

I have a list of all of the members of the 390th Sv. Sq. and I would like to try and contact any of the surviving members if possible. Does anyone have a good idea on how to go about doing that. I am also looking for pictures of any of the aircraft from the 406th.

Aeromaster did a decal sheet for the 406th in 1/72 which I already own, but I am just looking for anything else I can come up with. Hasegawa or Academy did one of their 1/48 P-47D in 406th colors (Angie was the a/c name).

Any help on this little project of mine would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Have you seen this web site?

Thank you for the link. I looked at the site last night as a matter of fact and it had some interesting material in it, but it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for. I was up until almost 5am this morning looking for information and a lot of what is out there is just the same stuff over and over. Hopefully if I get ambitious I can make something that will be interesting to everyone.
