I’ve seen the 381st BG’s tail markings in red and green, the red being identical to the 91st BG’s markings, and the green being only the tail. Were these both used, or am I misinformed? If both were used, when was the difference made?
The 381st BG tail markings were in red. Red tails and wing tips were the markings for the 1st Combat Bomb Wing which included the 91st, 381st, and 398th BG’s.
I have seen reference to the green tail colors on 381st BG aircraft too. I’m not sure if it was used on just their early B-17’s or not though. The most common color that was painted on the 381st birds was red, much like the 91st BG. If you go to www.381st.org I’m pretty sure they can answer your question for sure. Plus it’s a cool website.
