Greetings all… Thinking of adding a buggy / cart to my next dio with some scale hay inside.
Any suggestions for replicating 35th scale hay?

Never done hay before. How do you want it? Strewn all over the place or in rectangular bales?
In my honest opinion, I reckon Woodlands Scenics medium grass (the pale tan coloured stuff) would do it some justice.
Real 1/1 scale straw can be broken down into smaller strands. For smaller than 1/35 scale I would attempt using suitable blond colored hair. Get the color accurate as possible to be convincing.
Now if adding stacks do your research as to how this was done during your time frame. I do not think square bales came about until post WWII? Europe during WWII would have stacks pitched manually, possibly the smaller ‘T-pee’ style ones you see in pre-WWII photographs. They would be easy to model by tying groups of fiber and then trimming the tops after its set. Diluted white glue added to the knot and allowed to cure will help hold it together.

I used some a couple of years ago in this dio:
It was from an AM company that I cannot recall right now but laid down well and I just dull-coated it in place once I arranged it to my liking…I’ll see if I can dig out the company name…
…or you can use hair from your wife’s brush…

PS - the wife’s hair just doesn’t have that crusty-hay texture to it… but an old paintbrush might
