I’m building a 1/48 Tamiya Bubbletop Jug that I plan to finish in the distinctive markings of Major Glenn Eagleston, CO of the 353rd FS. I have one reference that shows the Anti-glare panel, forward of the black cowl flaps, to be in black and another that shows it in Olive Drab, same as the rest of the panel aft of the cowl flaps. Looking at the B&W photos I have available, it is not conclusive but I am leaning toward the OD. If anyone has a definitive answer or more convincing photo evidence, I would greatly appreciate your reply. Thanks.
rjk,
I have a copy of Osprey’s P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the 9th and 15th. The drawings they have in there show Maj Eagleston and another of the 353rd FS aircraft. In both the anti-glare panels both forward and aft are black. I hope it helps but they are only an artists rep of what he beleives the colors were…

Thanks for the response. I have the same book but have learned not to trust artists’ profiles, especially Osprey’s. I am pretty sure the panel aft of the cowl was in dark OD, but can’t conclude what color the forward portion was. Actually, the model would look good with the black panel all the way back, so I may do it that way and quite worrying about accuracy. I only build for me anyway.
rjk,
Here is another artists rendering:

and it shows it with what looks like dark OD front and back…
RJK,
I’ve looked at my stuff and they appear black in the photos…

AKlabunde: Thanks for the profile. The aft panel is definitely OD in that rendition, but at least on my monitor the forward panel could be either.
Jeff: Thanks for your reply. Any reference in your stuff that I could use? Iv’e been searching for an in-flight photo that shows the entire spine and top of cowl, but only photos I can find are of parked AC from ground level.
