29 Ford Rat Roaster pickup

Still no paint booth and my hands are feeling somewhat better… so I decided to take a crack at another project. I am using the Revell 29 Model A pickup for the base, chassis from the Revell Model A Roadster, 3d printed spoked wheels, 3d printed blown Ardun Flathead, 3d printed quick change rear, 3d printed front axle, 3d printed bomber seats, resin sprint car steering gear and pitman arm, and a resin Cockshutt tractor grille. It’s getting chopped and channeled with a bobbed bed. I have some decisions to make about the wheels and whether or not to leave the doors opening. I am also debating whether or not I’ll be keeping the tractor grille for a different rod. As for the wheels and tires, they are 15x8/ 16x10 from MCV and they’re just way too wide for my taste

15" have been removed from the bed. Once the glue sets up, I can measure for the notches before mocking the body for the front Z measurements. In the meantime, I’ll be measuring and chopping the top and removing the floor for the channel. I think a 6" top chop along with the giant rear z will get this thing as looking as aggressive as possible.

6" removed from the rear. Do I fight the doors and leave them opening or glue them shut?

The top is chopped and setting up. A little filling to do on the back. Once the roof is set, I’ll do the doors.

I like the direction you’re going on this. I would keep the fat rear tires and go skinny up front, glue the doors shut, and find a different, more traditional grill. That’s just my two cents, for what it’s worth. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it’s going to turn out great!

I think I am going to remove two inches from the front and rear wheels and tires. I have two sets of these wheels and they’d look better at full width on a heavier vehicle. I plan on doing a s**cide perch on the front, so a Model A grille is already on the table. I am going full bore on the doors and going to try my best to keep them swinging… for now.

Best of luck on those doors!

Thanks. I am definitely going to need it. They’re easily the biggest con of this old kit… but I aint no quitter. Lol

I went 50/50 on the doors. I glued one door shut to strengthen the body while I cut out the floor for the channel. She’s really shaping up to become an awesome truck. Very satisfied thus far.

I finally got the front of the frame Z’d and chopped off the front horns. I decided against the Cockshutt grille for this one and pulled out the MCG chopped 32 grille. The front axle will get moved forward once I add the front perch, hopefully adding just a tiny bit more rake. I chopped out the radiator/ grille mount and moved it forward to accommodate the 29 roadster radiator.

A close up of the Z. This is the best and easiest technique and it should be straight forward from the image. If not, and starting from the driver side… find the point where you want to start your Z and make a vertical mark, measure to the front of the frame and translate that mark to the passenger side of the frame. Measure the height of the frame where your first mark is and add that measurement forward of your first mark and add your second mark. Connect the lines from the top left to the bottom right and it should be almost a perfect 45° mark. Use the same instruction but using the opposite left to right marks for your angle on the other side. There’s no change in wheel base and there’s no adding of material to get your drop. Cut one side at a time and keep your razor saw dead vertical.

Glad to see that your hands are on the mend!
I am loving where this is going! Now this is just me and me only..
I’d cut the roof top open like a sun roof and then put some 2x4s across(length wise) and make it a ragtop sun roof.
Just my 2 cents haha

Thanks, man. The tops come separate oob making your modification significantly easier. The kit also has a roadster body and a track nose grille.

Any time and you are most welcome!! Ah ok cool!
I started a hot rod/rat rod a few years ago and put it on the back burner.
I may need to pull it out again!

Get it out and get er done. If you have any questions about techniques or certain styles, I have a wealth of knowledge in the world of rods and kustoms and always willing to help in any way I can.

Quite the ambitious project. Looks super cool. It’s amazing detail on the engine and wheels.

Thanks. It’s been a labor of love and I have enjoyed every bit of it. 3d printing is changing the entire hobby as we know it. Detail nuts like myself are absolutely embracing it. Unfortunately, I am going to have to split the wheels and tires to thin them because they’re yuge! And I prefer 50’s styled rods.

Haha just need to dig it out and I’ll definitely take you up on that offer!
Much appreciated!

I like the whole set up that you’ve got going on for this car Dan. Looking forward to seeing some paint fly onto it too.

The star of the show will be the Scot blown Ardun Flattie, so I think the body should be a dark satin blue or green over a gloss black chassis with black wires. That should give it a nice balance to that giant motor.
