21st Century Toys F4U-1A Corsair- Completed Pics

I finished 21st Century Toys 1/32 F4U-1A Corsair. It’s a decent kit, especially given it’s low price. I added a few details to the interior and engine, but the rest is pretty much OOB. This was one of the most fun builds I’ve done in a while, and I look forward to building another 21stCT kit.

I’ve posted more pics and a build report that I’ve been working on throughout the build.

Wow Jon, that came out beautiful. The weathering is excellent! I’ll have to investigate those 21st Century kits. Do they make anything in 1:48, I wonder?

Looks like a real winner, Jon. Your pre-shading method came through great after all of the finishing touches! THis is one of your nicest yet, at least in the area of paint and weathering.

I agree Jon…the pre-shading is well done and effective. i really like the paint wear look as well. Great looking Corsair!!!

Jerry

too bad the wings don’t fold.

I have the 21st Century Toys 1/32 scale A6M2 zero and the 1/32 scale ME-109.

so how do you like the pilot figure.

Very nice work Jon [tup]. Great looking Corsair.

Regards, Rick

Love that wear on the prop!! Great job over all.

jwb very nice corsair. The weathering all around is excellent. The 3 tone soft line camo looks like the real deal. I also like the the prop and paint chipping, well placed and looks very realistic. Now I have to ask, are you getting to the point where if the model goes together well you spend most of yout time weathering and adding those finishing touches? I know with alot of my models weathering and adding some scale effects can be the most time consuming. The only thing I see is with the paint that badly beat up the white on the insignias really stands out. they should look like the rest of the paint work. A very realistic example of whistling death my favorite US war bird.

Jon, that’s TOO sweet. I’ve seen these at WM but also have been avoiding them. After seeing what you’ve done, though, I have to pick one up. Last I was there, they had a P-51 in Old Crow markings.

You’re a bad influence, ya know[;)]?

Well hot dayum! [yeah] That’s perfect lad!!

Well done Jon, that’s the way they should look. Awsome job on the weathering. Now go get another and get started while you remember what you did[(-D]

A bad influance Preston?[%-)] Don’t hang around me near the vendors at the nat’s then[:-^]

Outstanding work Sir!

I finally got hold of one, and I hope it turns out 1/4 as good as yours.[bow]

I was pleased to find they got they got the rudder offest right too. Some companies have missed that.

I’m going to build it in tandem with the classic Revell kit in the same scale. It’ll be interesting to see how the two compare when sitting side by side.

Jon-

Wow, you have really outdone yourself with that one! Your weathering turned out beautifully, very realistic and random! I love it! [tup]

Nice… very nice finish.

Fade to Black…

ModelNerd- Thanks! I believe they make pre-assembled kits in 1/48, but I don’t think they have unassembled kits in that scale. What I’m hoping for is that they’ll release some of their 1/18th scale kits as unassembled models. [:D]

Mikeym_US- Actually, they do fold, but I decided to glue them in place. Check out the build report and there’s a bit more about it there. Thanks for the nice words!

phoenix7187- Thanks for the kind words! I spent more time weathering on this one than I normally do, but I think the size had something to do with it. The paint chipping with the silver pencil took an evening, and I still wish I’d have done a little more in some areas. The panel line stuff took a while, again because of the size. But as I learn more, I do spend more time on that aspect of a build, because I have a more tricks to attempt. (And thus more chances to blow it! LOL) Good point on the decals also- do you have some tips on doing that? I’d love to do that on the Spitfire I’m working on now.

Preston- Thanks, man! Pick all of 'em up- how’s that for an influence? [:D] They are fun builds for a great price.

DrewH- Thanks buddy! I’ve already got a Spitfire IX about 1/3 complete (jwb doing a Spitfire?!?!) and I’ll start on an XP-60 today.

kustommodeler1- Thanks! That’ll be neat to see the two builds. I recall building that kit in the late 70’s. They boxed the Corsair and a Zero for the “Black Sheep Squadron” show. Can’t wait to see those!

mucker, dragonfly, rjkplasticmod, Phildirt, daywalker, BlackWolf3945- Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words.

Jon… first off, what are you doing up at 5:50 on a Sunday? I am not too happy about being up at 7:30 much less that time[;)]

But what a pleasure it was to have that be the 1st thing I saw today. I think it is your best effort so far. The weather is top notch. There was a recent discussion, maybe in the aramor section, about what is TOO flat. You have that slight bit if sheen that even the really beat up aircraft have when the light hits it just so. Nice one dude.

A very nice Corsair you’ve done! Very nicely built, painted and weathered!

I’ve seen a few 21 century toys kits on ebay, but I felt unsure if they’re worth buying, but it seems they are. So maybe I should consider buying one.

Azgaron

Jon,

Just one word… EXCELLENT! It’s rare I even build WWII warbirds but I really like what you did to that Corsair. I’ll be starting the Revell 1/48 P-61 after my F-4J and I hope it comes out nearly as good your Corsair.

OUTSTANDING!

Top Job, Apart from a detailed resin pit, you couldnt improve on it. But as you said you wanted to build it OOB. Awesome man, Simply awesome.

…Guy

Great job! I might pick one of these up. $10!? It looks better than the Tamiya 1/72.

wing_nut- Was it that early? [:)] Enjoying a beautiful day from the Lord! Thanks so much for your encouraging words- they mean a lot to me. You have always been someone who I really admired their modeling skills, and your words make me feel great! Thanks!

Azgaron- Thanks so much! The 21stCT kits are a bargain.

Air Master Modeler, Luftwoller, Matt90- thanks so much guys!
