When I rejoined modeling a couple 3 Yrs. ago from my youth,I of course made a Tiger as 1 of my 1st few models & a Panther too.I built them both o.o.b. with no zimmerit.I knew of it,but didn’t dare to try just then.Well now that I’ve built many more models, read many books &mags,I-net site’s and of course this great forum,I want to do 2 new 1’s .I liked the uniformity that these 2 tool’s will produce. But the prob is each has differant teeth spacing. The Lionroar says it’s for Tiger 1’s,Sturmtiger’s,Kingtigers,Jagtiger’s & Tiger P’s.Is Tiger P a term I’ve just never heard referring to a Panther ? The instruction’s show sillouettes[ black 1’s ] that look’s more like a panther than a Porsche turret. Also the LR. 1 has very fine teeth, while the AFV tool has 2 wheels of differant width’s & much wider teeth spacing.Anyone familiar with these tools,or a view as to which tank[ pan or tig ] might have which. The actual models are a Tam.“Panther” Ausf. “G” SdKfz 171 late & A AFV club Tiger 1 Ausf.“E” SdKfz 181 . I believe this Panther falls into the " some did, some didn’t " category. Anyone care to help ? thanks , rudedog
Rudedog, the late Panther could actually be safely built w/o zimmerit–it was discontinued during their production run, so you’ll see G’s in zimm, but most late G’s I’ve seen actually didn’t use it. Check your references before you start, and decide…The Tiger is a more likely candidate, and I’d say to use a scrap piece of plastic and do a section of zimmerit with each tool so you get an idea of what it would look like in scale, and then trust your eyes–check your references and “eyeball” what looks closest to the tank you want to model.
A “tiger (P)” is a Porshe Tiger, period. A wise man might point out that if the manufacturer can’t get such basic info correct then you’d be unwise to trust their assertions that such-n-such “zimmerit width” is dogmatically for one specific tankk or the other. Sounds more like clever marketing to me![#dots]

Thank’s doog, that’s some sound advice about the tool Mfgr. !!! I did think I was safe to not apply it to the Panther, just wanted clarification that at least some had it.And I will test both, but,am just curious if the Panthers that did [ as well as that model Tiger ] ever be seen with that rectangular zimm[ where the differant widths would be handy ].Yes,testing will decide which tool looks more scale correct. What’s your fav epoxy for Zimm, doog ?
I guess I’m probably “old school”; I just use SQUADRON" green/white putty, with TAMIYA zimm applicators. I admit that lately I’ve been a bit lazy and have used some Cavalier and Attak pre-formed zimm sheets; I put 'em on with gap-filling super glue. I used some for the Jagtiger I just posted to a reply in “armor” about a first-time Panther; it was a pleasant product to work with.
I too am guilty of that, doog. My reason is it’s faster.I can only sit for about an hour at a time. But for these 2 cat’s I’m driven to try it just to learn another new skill. rudedog
