(2) P-51-D's Revell & Tamiya (wip-finish)

[dto:] It’s a darn nice kit for that price. In fact, for the price I would recommend it over the Revell, excepting it being a Korean era.

There isn’t any real difference in the WW2 and Korean War -era Mustangs, other than the insignia, markings, and buzz numbers, along with the installation of the rocket-stubs, although some WW2 Ponies had those as well…

Internally, they had different radio sets and set-ups, and there were a couple additions to the weapons-arming-panel to reflect the addition of the rockets, but that’s about it… A larger number of P-51Ks were in Korea as well, but the only external difference between them and D-models are the “Dallas Canopy” and the prop…

By the time some Korean War Mustangs got a couple hundred hours on them, the canopies had probably been replaced once with wahtever was available (the supply situations for both the Army and Air Force were woefully inadequate at that time), and the prop may have been as well, so you probably wouldn’t tell a D from a K without the data plaque and logbook for it…

I did a dual build with Tamiya and Revell/Monogram P-51B’s a few months ago in the 8th Air Force Group build. Got the Tamiya Mustang Mk III for $18, the R/M B model for $12 on ebay(shipping included). Everyone knows about the Tamiya, but the R/M built up nose to nose with the Tamiya. I did put a resin cockpit in the R/M, but the kit office was really nice enough without the a/m parts.

Revell/Monogram Top, Tamiya Bottom:

Revell/Monogram Left, Tamiya Right

They both look great setting together.

I did use the birdcage open canopy from the Tamiya kit on the Revell/Monogram kit with slight modification. But in the end, a Tamiya single engine (especially the older issues) can be bought for $20 and less. Patience is the key. Rick

That’d be the late 90s Revellogram P-51B, not the original 1967 B-model…

As for the tamiya Mustang, I got one… Thanks to the R-man for remnding me of it, lol… I just want the Staff Car… But not for 27.50…

HA! That reminds me, they placed that same type of stamp right smack in the middle of the underside of the stabilizer. That was fun to sand off for a NMF. [:^)]
