1st winter tank!

Just completed my first attempt at a winter camo scheme! This is a straight from the box build of Dragons 1/72nd scale King Tiger.

Thankfully this all plastic Zimmerit coated version is an improvement on the orginal metal hulled kit. I can’t comment on accuracy but construction was no problem.

I painted the model with a 3-tone scheme before taking the plunge and spraying white over the top. The worn look of the white paint was achived by brushing soap powder solution over the desired areas to flake away the white paint.

The model was the suitably muddied up to represent a tank in action.

As I said its my first attempt at a white tank so any comments or suggestions would be very welcome.

I really like this Braille scale Tiger. I think you’ve done a fairly good job. There are a few easy additions that would really improve the realism.

The drivers vision blocks seem to be molded over and you’ve white washed them. I would take care of that…even a little gloss black to simulate the periscope glass would do at this scale.

The Blackout lamp had a conduit running to the lamp base from an appendage on the top hull plate as well. A little piece of fuse wire might work here.

The mudguards have some visible clumps of mud, but the roadwheels and track are “clump free”, granted a lot of muck would fly off when the vehicle rolled down a semi improved road…

The spare track blocks look pristine, I would suspect they would show some measure of rust if exposed to snow and weather in the winter. Same with the tow cables.

The shanks on the tow cables are carefully whitewashed…hmmmm…don’t know if the field applied whitewash would have been that neat…

The AA mount looks to be a solid molded block, not your issue but a little scratch work with some stretched sprue or .02 styrene rod would go a long way here…

Nice OOB build…ready to try 1/35th scale?

regards

Steve

Looks like you did a pretty good job and you have more guts than I on trying a winterwash. You might want to darken the end of the exhaust pipes, they look a little clean.

Except for what was previously mentionned, looks good to me. Is the Zim molded on at this scale, or did you made yourself?

Well done. I’d be quite proud to have that in my collection.

Cheers for the feedback.

  • Missing front lamp wire - I only noticed this after i’d painted the kit. I might add it later but hoped no-one would notice

-Driver vision blocks - not noticed this before, point taken will correct it.

  • Mud on wheels - There actually is quite a bit of mud on the wheels it just doesnt show up on the pictures.

  • Spare tracks - they are a bit rusted over with Mig powders, I think the varnishing blew some of this off though so i’ll do them again

-Tow cable - I agree this looks crappy, I’ll go over the shanks in some sort of dark/dirty colour, doubt they would have whitewashed these anyway

  • AA mount - There is more detail to this than shows on the pictures. Something to look at on future KTs though.

  • Exhaust pipes- theres are an oily steel colour, its just lighter where the flash has bounced off them (they are nearly black on the kit)

  • The Zimm is mouled on thankfully

Overall I know this kit acks some details but I was reluctant to spent the time and money on what was just an experiment in whitewashing that I didnt have great hopes for. Overall it came out better than I expected so I now have more confidence to try it on more detailed projects.
