Hello All,
Here’s hoping I finally got this process through this thick head of mine.
If it works comments and criticisms are welcome. Looking for c/c on the build and techniques not historical accuracy.
Also if this succeeds a big thanks to Dwight for all his help and patience.
O.K. so here goes
Let me know what you think.
Regards,
Joe
Hey Dwight,
[bow][bow][bow][bow][bow][bow][bow][bow]
Thanks ever so much.
Regards,
Joe
Looks pretty nice, Joe. You really got some heavy weathering going there! For me, the tow cable looks a little too heavily rusted. It looks like it would part ways if it needed to be used, but that’s just me.
The winter camo and the mud look particularly effective. Nice job! Thanks for posting it. Glad you got it figured out.
how did you make the mud? really nice build
Congrats on getting the pic to post! I know a lot of us here had to try more than a few times trying to post pix!
The build looks very good. Great mud, and the overall weathering is very well done.
I don’t know if this is a “historical accuracy” comment or not, but perhaps the whitewash is a little too “complete.” That is, it looks like a vehicle that came from the factory originally painted in white, rather than an OD vehicle haphazardly whitewashed in the field for winter camo. Too much white “coverage!” Sorry if that’s not the type of comment you asked for…I guess it can be considered a “technique” comment! A more “realistic” effect might be achieved by actually painting the tank OD first, then slopping on a whitewash, just like the boys did way back then.
Other than that, you might want to find a tow cable that’s not quite so “frizzy.” Cotton or twine thread tends to frizz quite a bit, even if you try to knock it down with paint. Try picture hanging wire, or frizz-free nylon thread of the proper thickness.
Finally, there may be just the teeny-tiniest hint of a seam line visable on top of the 75mm gun barrel…or it could just be dirt!! No big whoop.
Thanks for posting your fine Sherman! [:)]
One request: can we see some more? A side and rear shot, perhaps? [;)]
Also, when you post a pic, please include some info about it. You know; what scale, what manufacturer, what vehicle, etc.! [;)]
My guess is this is Tamiya’s 1/35 M4A3. Yes?
Other than the whitewash being a little over done, you’ve done a really good job. The mud looks authentic. Please show us some more pics!
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the comments.
wipw,
yep, agree it does come off too rusty. I’m hoping I can tone it down some.
tomzag,
you’re trying my memory now. I think I used a dark water based paint with some white glue, coffee grounds and perhaps some ground up pastel chalk. No particular recipe just started throwing things together until I was happy with it.
J-Hulk,
your’s are just the kind of comments I’m looking for. I hate to admit it, but I did paint it OD and then tried a haphazrd application and wasn’t happy, so took out the airbrush and went overboard the other way. Do you think if I try a bush lightly moistened with thinner and went over it that it would help to tone it down and give it a more realistic lok/
The thread I used doesn’t look bad on the model, but when you magnify it, it does really stand out. As for the barrel, this is the Tamiya M-4-A3 and I think it’s a one piece barrel.
I really apppreciate all the comments and hope to get more. I’ve seen the work others post and know they ( the comments good and bad) can only help in the long run.
Will be getting some more pictures posted soon, I hope.
Will add that now I’ll be able to post pictues I feel more like a part of the board as oppossed to just posting text every now and again.
Thanks Everyone,
Joe
Well, a “bush” might be a little hard to handle [;)][;)], but a brush just might work!! [;)][;)]
One concern about that…what kind of paints did you use for the OD and the whitewash? You might strip it right down to the plastic if you’re not careful.
I think I saw an article by Adam Wilder where he “reverse whitewashed” a T-34…that is, he painted it completely white first, then basically drybrushed the “base coat” green on. Pretty good effect, as I recall.
Either way, good luck, and keep us posted! [:)]
Hey Everybody,
Due to the overwhelming demand for more (J-Hulk), here we go,

J-Hulk,
I meant a brush that would make it look like it had been applied with a bush[:D].
The OD was Model Master enamel with believe it or not an overspray of Floquil laquer. I think if I use mineral spirits and [u]brush[u] lighly, I should be OK.

Joe
Thanks for the new pic!
That is indeed some nice mud you’ve whipped up there.
Sounds like your OD should be OK. Give it a try, and see what you get!

I think its a good Sherman Panther44.
One thing I’ve learned is that there may very well
have been a Sherman in the field that looked
exactly like that one. So don’t worry too much
about changing it now. Just do another one.
You can never have too many Shermans [:D][:p][:o)]
Very nice build. Good work !
Regards, Rick
Is this doesn’t show up, can someone offer assistance? I’m doing the same thing every time (I think) but can’t do multiple pictures and didn’t get the last single image to post.
Worked that time.
Make sure when you do multiple posts that you put the [ img ] and [ /img ] one each link.
Good luck. The “corroded” areas on the hull sides really look realistic. How did you achieve that effect?
Hey I-beam,
Thanks, I agree, one can never have too many Shermans. Don’t let the Panther 44 fool you. That’s my favorite German tank, not my favorite.[:D]
With about 57 kits and more than half are Shermans or Sherman variants, not to worry. I only have 4 German kits.
Hi Bill,
Thanks, I took a stiff bristle brush cut down to about an 1/8 inch and dipped it into some rust colored paint and tapped it on paper towel to remove most of the paint, then tapped it lighlty on the side to get a few spots. Followed that with some pastel chalks.
What did you mean when you said,
Make sure when you do multiple posts that you put the [ img ] and [ /img ] one each link.

Wow, that’s one muddy beast. I love the thick, caked on mud look.
Thanks for the pics.
