The decal and weathering is the fun stuff! Looking forward to seeing how the Marston mat goes together.
The Jeeps certainly turned out very nice, considering the problems you had with it. I just would encourage to reconsider the antenna. It is way too think. Imagine what the real thickness would be (multiply by 48)…
I’ll have another look at it. The instructions called for about 2 inches of stretched sprue, which I didn’t want to fuss with, so I used some wire. I think I have smaller wire I can use. This fit the mounting hole perfectly.
The mounting hole was for an antenna base… Even 22 gauge wire (.025" or .625mm) would be too thick… something more along the lines of 30 gauge (.010" or .25mm) would be more representative…
I had to wait for some info but the top of a full antenna used for tanks was 3/16". The lowest section 1/2"
You can do the maths
I took golikell’s advice and redid the jeep’s antenna. I found some picture hanging wire in my shop, removed a single strand and cut it to length. Then I snipped the tip off a gluing pipette to make the antenna base, sprayed it all black, and glued into place. I’m really pleased with the results, so many thanks to golikell for pointing out my folly. Here’s a pic of the result:
I spent the rest of the session building a trailer and some stowage and wheel chocks for the
P-38. Here is a pic of the result:
The ropes on the chocks need to relax a little bit, as I had to paint them brown, they came as bright white. Now that all the vehicles for the diorama are built, its on the decaling, weathering, and building the marston mat base.
More to come, happy modeling!
They look great and the new antenna is a good upgrade. It’s cool that people in this group are so helpful with the ideas and you are also open to hearing them.
THIS is the level of historical detail I’m here for! Glad to see I’m not the only person who will hunt down photographs for in-the-field color references…
That is what I strive for too, and I try to help people too with this kind of knowledge, but only if they are open for it…
I got the knowledge in this case while researching the M3 Lee I was building.
I thought the way you communicated your suggestion was very respectful and helpful.
This is coming along great. If you are looking for more realism, you may want to repaint the jeep seats as they were not black. They were covered in an OD Green canvas that faded quickly to a tanish-green.
Thank you. I guess I will add some white to some very thin od green to try to achieve that faded color. It is info and suggestions like this that make this community great!
Thank you. Since I am new to this forum I do not know yet if there are any sensitivities. But I am glad to hear that it is accepted the way put it.
I used a buff on the seats of this 1/35 Italeri kit
