This is my first build since I was a kid. It’s Tamiya’s 1/48 Tiger I Initial Production (Africa Corps). The build has been pretty straight forward. I’m doing it pretty much OOB, however, I will be using WW2 Productions track set. Weathering will be done later. I probably should not have painted the hull till it was assembled (I’m painting the hull everytime i add a piece due to different shades).
Welcome back! I noticed a seam where the bottom of your glacis meets the forward area of the nose. That line should be filled (on the real thing, there was a weld bead there). HTH
[#welcome]-- nice going so far dude— !!— i recently came back(about a year and a half ago) after a 33 yr absence myself-- let me tell you-- this is the place to be!!the guys on this forum will give you all the help, advice and insight you may want or need— good peeps here!![^]-- the tiger looks real sharp so far!!-- treadwell[:P]
I would suggest using Tamiya tape on both side of the seam, then use 3M (Red) Auto Body Filler (Found at Walmart) then pull the tape slowely while the putty is still wet.
Here are a couple of suggestions, all of which I have done on my current project and they look good.
take a toothpick and dab Testors Red Putty… makes a nice seam. You might need to go over 2 or 3 times.
Take a toothpick and dab Mr Surfacer 500. This is super thin and will take 4 coats or so. Not recommended.
Take some epoxy putty and roll it into a very thin and long roll. Then put that down on the crease and smash it down with a knife. Looks good and like a seam.
I am amazed at how far the hobby has come since I was using tube glue and toothpicks. The quality and variety of kits is fantastic, as is the level of authenticity.
Thanks for all the comments, they are very appreciated. There is some unbelieveable talent around here, if I can even approach the level of you guys I will be very pleased.
Welcome back to the hobby and to FSM. The build is looking good, I have the same kit myself and can’t wait to see how your build will turn out. I’ve built the 1/48 StugIII B and that’s also a great little kit.
Here’s pics of the 90% completed Tiger. Some final assembly left, and then it’s off to weathering. I’ve been brushing up on weathering techniques, especially desert/sand weathering. Hopefully next weekend will see the completed tank.
I was happy to get the open space in the front glacis puttied and filled (thanks for all the help), definitely should have waited to paint the hull till after assembly.
One of the most difficult parts in this kit for me, was to make the molded tools look 3D and realistic(i.e. Ax, shovel, and bolt cutters). 1/48 scale armor makes detailing a bit difficult, since it’s so small, and a lot is molded on the hull.
The kit, over-all, has been very fun and a joy to build. It’s really giving some of my old skills a good work-out. I’ve been reading and studying every new modeling technique available to try and brush-up on all the changes in the last 30 years.
