No worries, ken, that’s now my SOP for any GB, no pint in being to strict is there. Its meant to be a fun hobby [bnghead]
Thanks guys…I will certainly be a go for the 1945…just need to get something.
Factory is working overtime to meet the deadline
Yesterday, camouflage upper colors were applied.
AMT-11 was 70% RLM65 +20% Tire Black +10% Light Grey
AMT-12 was 60% RLM65+30% Tire Black +5% Light Grey + 5% Bright Blue
All Gunze acrylics.
Then a gloss coat was applied as usual and left to dry.
I made no scientific research for the colors, I just tried for them to look ‘right’ based on a few profiles and photos I have.
Gorgeous paint job Zvez! Really nicely done. Very clean and sharp. I’m no Soviet color expert so it looks dead on to me. Although I may have to get acquainted with them as I’m considering an Eduard La-7 for the "45 GB. Did you spray that by hand?
Great Job Zvezda…
That’s one gorgeous looking Yak, Zvezda!
Something went very wrong with the fist coat on an AM Avenger I did last year. I stripped it very clean with ISP. Blick sells “Acrylic Remover” for cleaning paint brushes and it’s mostly ISP. Not sure how well it would do on enamels. Glad I did it though - it was a brilliant kit and the model turned out very nicely the second time around.
Eric
Great work on that Zvezda, really nice job on the camo.
Well the Missouri is done.
I have learned some real lessons with this ship build.
Hope you like it. There are some major things wrong but at least I made it thru.
That is certainly an excellent job of painting, Zvezda. You have really achieved something there! Nice work!
And you, also, Doug. Good to see Missouri finished. The camouflage measure is very appealing and well-done! Good for you, for sticking with it.
Doug very nice model of such a legendary ship.
Thanks for the comments guys.
Joe the undersides were masked, upper camo was airbrushed free-hand. This is my first attempt with a new GREX airbrush I bought. It’s a very nice tool and deserves most of the credit.
Regarding the colors, I have seen endless debates on the net. There is a mr Pilawski that is regarded as the top knowledge on the matter but lately many people say he is not so accurate.I got a headacke and stopped searching [+o(]
Mo looks fine indeed. World always needs more ship models - make sure you do more.
Eric
Nomad,
Well done the finished product is impressive. You have learnt some lessons, so have I in following your build and the helpful tips on the way. I will do my first ship model next year. Promise.
Eric, Hobson has come up really well. And like you say, I am glad to see that she was supporting the landings from the Channel, not Hawaii. Hardly ever seen the channel looking blue - that green grey colour is what I remembered.
Joe - Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Good luck with the recovery - and therapy.
Bish, the dio is looking great, mud is (yet another thing) on the to do list. One of these days…
Zvezda, very good painting there, what do you thin the Gunze with? And how soon before the next coat?
Ajd, sorry but I had to laugh when I read about the cockpits, I thought I was the only one like that… But it is looking good.
G-J, looking forward to seeing the progress after the great details.
GT98, I couldn’t possibly comment on your condition since I only complete 4 to 6 models a year. And I couldn’t possibly repeat what the wife said…
So well done everyone, I need to go and finish my 2014 car in the next 60 hours.
Thanks for hosting Bish, see you for the 1945 GB, and probably the SW GB too.
Piers
Thanks Bish and Clemens for running this GB. This was my FIRST GB when I joined the site last January. Been a bit busy since then and I am so stoked to have finally found a modelling community to build with. Never had one and always wanted one. I was with a small club in Kingston, On, but, not much building going on with those guys, so, THANKS!! Cheers and Happy New Year to all!! See ya’ll in 1945!!
Doug, I personally think that you have done an absolutely remarkable job on a kit that is not up to today’s standards of molding. You have transformed an nice old kit into a very impressive piece of work. Trust me, your work on Big Mo has certainly inspired me to try my hands at a ship model. Great, great job.
Zvezda, Man, do not sell yourself short. No matter how nice an airbrush is, it’s all about the skills of the person operating it. And you have done an excellent job on free handing the camo. Sounds like debating Soviet colors is on par with the numerous opinions on RLM colors.
Piers, Thanks my friend. The recovery is going well. As for therapy, I don’t need no stinking therapy. A few huffs off the Easy Lift Off and everything is juuuust fine. Hey…I don’t remember having a paisley colored aardvark running around. WEEEEE![:D]
Alright, Having got some fresh air in me I’ve managed to complete the paint stripping stage of the recovery process. All went well. I’ll do a little touch up sanding and then the primer and paint will go on.
Great save Joe!!
Well I finally did something on the Thunderbolt. No pics but all masked ready for OD. Hopefully spray tomorrow night. Pics then. John
Piers thank you.
I use Gunze’s acrylic thinner + a few drops of Gunze’s Leveling Thiner. Then I let it dry inside a closet (dust free environment) for at least a full 24 hrs.
Joe: Looking good! Now get some paint on her and make her look all pretty again!
Doug: I got your Missouri added to the front page! Don’t sell yourself short, she looks really nice!
