1942 HMCS Sackville

This is a little something (1/72 Matchbox…little?) I’ve been plugging away at for the past year and a bit. It’s the short fosc’le version of the HMCS Sackville, as it would have apeared around 1942. Some of the more drastic things I had to do was trim back the fosc’le to an early corvette, scratch the new superstructure and square the stern. Overall I’m quite pleased with the way it turned out.

Comments always welcome!

A very nice build ! I love the new bridge you scratch built (along with all the other details) that turn this into something different from the standard corvette.

Great work on the conversion, detailing and weathering (the rusting on the hull looks very effective)! Definitely one of the best builds of this kit I’ve seen. It’s not often you see a model of an early short-foc’sle corvette - did you scratchbuild all the extra parts, or use any aftermarket details?
I also have a question about the large winch at the stern - was this for minesweeping? (never seen this on a Flower before)

I built this kit earlier this year as HMS Bluebell (K80). This is a fairly standard mid/late war RN corvette, no conversion work was needed though I added a lot of extra scratchbuilt detail. Here are a couple of photos (I’ll post some more if anyone’s interested):

This kit has a huge amount of conversion potential, it’s a shame it isn’t a bit smaller otherwise I’d buy a few more - as it is, you can only have so many 3"-long ship models! Even if you only build RN and RCN ships there are countless different configurations, and there are also USN, French, captured German, post-war civil, etc. vessels.

EPinniger,

Yes indeed, the large winch at the stern was for minesweeping! Pretty mucheverything was either scratchbuilt or heavily modified from the kit. The mast was missing so I had to make a new one from brass ( One of the guys I used to work with had started the model wayyyy back inthe day, and asked me if I would finish it so it could be donated to the seamanship school here at the Navy base where I am stationned). By the way, excellent job on the HMS Bluebell. This is by far one of my favorite kits, despite the fact that is can really show it’s age!
