141 kits in 6 months - unthinkable?

Many thanks for your kind comments and encouragement! I’ll try to respond to all
inquiries here.

HeavyArty, I built a lot myself in the past. But since I have no modelling talent
it’s better to have some talented modelers build them for me.

jcheung5150, all those kits will be built sooner or later. If you read my postscript
above, you’ll see that “Art Instructor” finished 6 pieces in 16 days. The 6th pieces
comprised 3 kits - Dragon’s Tiger I 3in1 + Tristar’s Figure set + Mini Art’s city
building. So that was 8 kits in 16 days, or 1 kit every 2 days. If he could maintain
that speed, he’ll finish 177.5 kits in just a year. And I have another permanent
modeler named “Niphon” who builds nice planes and ships, and also a visiting
modeler named “Jakkraphad” who can build anything including scratchbuild.

cj95, where to keep them once built is a good question. Soon I’ll need a new
building at the back of my house to keep more display cases.

ag918w35, a part of your questions have already been answered. As for the
cost of modellling, it depends on the complexity of the kits and it usually costs
more than the kits themselves, maybe twice as much. I usually don’t buy
after-market parts. All kits built will be kept in display cases in and around
my house.

Duke, my modelers built a lot in a year. May I refer to MM Annual Report 2004
which shows how many models were built (and shown on my site) last year :

waikong, thanks for posting the picture of my bedroom. That explains something.

MartinJK, I’ll make a new page available on Monday showing 6 new pieces,
most of which are newly-released models.

jcheung5150, I know a fellow modeler in Thailand whose stash of unbuilt kits is
some 1,200 boxes. My stash of unbuilt kits is so small when compared to his. [;)]

Ah, but can you build 141 models in a year ? That’s the question. Chuck

Actually, I think that was what I was trying to say. I average building about 85 kits a year (+/- five) just by myself, so I can see where it is possible. I meant no disrespect Model Maniac. I have complete faith that your entire stash will be built, replaced, and built again in no time. Not to mention the fact that your builds will far surpass mine in quality and sophistication. I’ll never have the award winners that you have in abundance.

Your room looks like mine, minus the showcases. I have all of 960+ models built up already in my room, and I am completely out of room to put any more. But I keep building; what can I say…

Thats my problem also, where to put the kits once they are built? For me the most fun is in buying and building.BTW how do you get that many kits home while riding a motor cycle MM ?[:)]

Well, there’s no need to build 141 kits in a year. It all depends on the convenience and available time of my modelers. I just counted Art Instructor’s work listed in the MM Annual Report 2004 (built and shown in 2004). It was 87 kits total, very close to Duke’s work. So I’m rather curious whether Duke don’t do anything else apart from modelling?.

CFRussell, for me the most fun is in buying models and admiring my collection.
Most of the kits were brought home on my motorbike. There was a time last year
when I carried 6 boxes of 1:32 planes home on the bike. One of the boxes was
Trumpeter’s A-10 A/N AW which was very big. This one alone was already
difficult to carry, but I could also carry 5 other boxes!. Anyway, the most troublesome one was when I brought Bandai’s Tiger I 1:15 home whose box was some 45 cm wide and 84 cm long. I clinged it to the left handle but it always touched the ground when I turned left. It was such a relief when I reached home with it intact. [;)]

Model Maniac. I’m happy to satisfy your curiosity. The year I built 85 models was the year I had two jobs going. I’m also very active in my church, and am a regular at my IPMS club meetings, both of which take up a good chunk of time. I also do all the housekeeping, running errands, doing laundry, dishes etc. since my wife is working full time and going to school full time. Right now, I’m also trying to get a couple of businesses started since my cabinet installation work is so haphazard right now. I usually build in the in-between hours between jobs and events, early morning for about 30 minutes before work, and in the evenings after work, cooking, cleanup and other chores. I rarely have a day when I can spend more than two hours consecutively at my bench per day. Most of the time I model whenever I can; 30 minutes here, 30 minutes there for an average of 1 to 1 1/2 hours per day about three to five days out of the week. Then again, I guess I get alot built because I build OOB. I don’t buy the PE detail sets, the resin add-ons or any other AM parts (except the occasional decal sheet). Whatever is in the box is what I use. That makes Art Instructor even better than me: he can build these outstanding kits with all the bells and whistles, detail them out to the nines, and still get 87 built in a year. What’s even more amazing is that Art Instructor can do all this while maintaining a lifestyle at least as busy as mine, if not more. He does twice the work on the same amount of models, so I’m really no comparison or anything to write home about.

Again, I meant no disrespect, and I can accept if you don’t believe what I posted here, but I tried to be as truthful and concise about my situation. I admire, envy and respect you for all you’ve accomplished, and I really love your collection. Keep those updates to your site going, I am a frequent visitor who is always in awe at what your builders do. Besides, it gives me a chance to look at true masters and maybe even learn something.

Enjoy those newest kits too. I’m intrigued at what the count will be in December!

Hey Model Maniac it sounds like you could use a small trailer behind your motor cycle .[(-D]

Duke, I believe all you posted, you’re very truthful. It seems to me that you have much more social functions than ‘Art Instructor’ do, and thus less time to build models.‘Art Instructor’ works at a school where his wife is a teacher. He accompanies school children to and from school in the morning and evening on a school van. During daytime he assembles models and he paints them on weekends though on some weekends he and he wife performed functions at “The Lion Society”. I really appreciate your comments concerning his work.

This evening, my new page will be available, showing 6 new pieces of work from him. I’ll post another message announcing it as usaul.

CFRussell, my 1/8 Panther with electric motors and 7A12V battery could haul a Toyota Corolla (with a little help from me at the start). So by comparision, my 125cc motorbike using 2-stroke gasoline engine with some 10+ horsepowers could be able to haul a Hummer, not just a small trailer! [;)]

Heh, nice one, Waikong[}:)]. Model maniac, Astounding!!!

Thank you Model Maniac. “Art Instructor” sounds like he’s got a great life!

I’ll be looking forward to seeing the new pics on your site.
