#13 Tamiya Kubelwagen Type 82, Build Complete!

Hello Everyone!

One of the other sites I post on was kind enough to send me out the new Tamiya # 304 Kublewagen Type 82, “Ramcke Parachute Brigade” kit as a complimentary kit to build and blog.

I promised two things that I would stay as OOB as possible and that I would start blogging ASAP even though I already have an active build. The first promise is easy to keep and I have only added the following After Market items:

* Archer Fine Transfers instrument decals

* Echelon stick on mirrors

* Eduard #35355 PE

The second promise I am going to keep as well but I am going to build and blog the base first instead of last because I plan to recreate the Box art exactly as shown and I needed a base for my LRDG Chevy for a show next weekend. This way I kill two birds wth one stone and meet all my pomises to Robin to the letter!

I saw this as an excellent opportunity to try out a new groundwork medium that Adam Kuller has used very sucessfully and taking his lead I plunged in.

I have used Celluclay and Apoxy Sculpt before for gound work and was very unhappy and dissapointed with the performance and slow drying time of the celluclay. It is very messy and tends to warp and crack especailly if you use a wood base and do not provide an adequate moisture barriar. I really enjoyed working with Apoxy Sculpt but it is very expensive. I used aproximately half of the pictured tub that cost $4,89 USD for this project. I simply spread the Wood Filler on a stained plaque and waited about an hour before I pressed in two Woodland Scenics rock outcroppings that I had made using Woodland Scenics molds and Hydrocal Castin plaster.

I also pressed in half of a fuel drum into the Filler that I planned to rust up to represent a half buried discarded fuel drum in the desert. I then let it set up over night and then primed the base with Tamiya Aerosol Light Sand

I also checked that the impressions set in by the truck the night before still looked the part.

After priming I set my sights on the oil barrel and because I wanted to provide a really rusted appearance I stippled Mr. Surfacer 500 mixed with a very fine sand to the barrel and then dove in using my favorite rusting materials from MIG. I taped off the barrel and sprayed MM Gunmetal follwed by MM Rust and then everything got fuzzy in a frenzy of activity

After completing the work on the fuel drum I aIr brushed Tamiya Buff mixed with a little flat white on the exposed rock outcropping followed by a dark grey wash. I then applied a Mineral sprits and Sepia oil wash to the entire base followed by an Oil buff dry brushing. I then applied a littlle fine sand with some white glue and then followed that with MIG Gulf War Sand.

I then peeled off the Painters tape and walla instant base for a low cost and completely done with 24 hours. Take that Celluclay!!

Schnobs, looks really really cool! Awesome you got it for free… And the PE, looking forward for it! You got that with the kit?

Stay as OOB as possible, and you “just” added three aftermarket items? That’s more than I add in three separate builds! [:(DD]

I built the same kit recently… I have yet to do the final update however… If you haven’t seen it, it may help. It’s a build log, quite detailed if I have to say so myself. Maybe even you’ll learn a few things or two, too?

Be aware of extensive ejector pinmarks…

That base looks really, really great! I have known of the woodfiller putty technique for a long time… Have yet to try it however!!

Hey schnobs that looks really terrific. Never thought of using that for ground work.

Thanks for the tip on the Wood Filler. I’ve had problems with Celluclay as well, so I’ll give your method a try.

Very nice work! I’ve heard of a lot of guys using that compound for groundwork with good resulys…is isn’t it water-based? …what is the set-up time?

Huxy: The kit was provided gratis and I paid for the AM items. The point was not to change the OOB look too much or give the impression that you had to purchase AM items to have a great build experience and as you already demonstrated with your build it isn;t necessary. i followed your Kubelwagen build form start to finish and you did a great job!

Marc: Thanks Marc it wasn’t an original ideal on my part. Indy uses it extensively and he walked me through the process and I was eager to try it.

Rick: You will not be dissapointed Rick.

Manny: Thanks Manny it’s great stuff! Yes it is water based and the best description I can use to describe the setup time harkens to my youth. It dries like a cowpie. It was ready to work with and to press objects in within an hour. It dries form the outside in like a cowpie so the crust was fairly solid in about 2-3 hours. I let it dry overnight and it was 80 to 90% solid. If you pressed hard with a fingertip it was just a little springy. It takes paint well and not like a hungry baby like celluclay does. All in all I was very impressed with it.

He’ll only use three, but he will scratch build the entire Kubel from tissue paper, CA, and charcoal briquettes.

Sounds like a neat project Ed and you’re off and running with the base too so we expect this one to be done in a week! No slacking off allowed! [;)]

I plan to use the Tropen Scheme on the Kubel becasue I need a change from desert monotone. I use acrylics so I will have to sort out the closest match to Afrika Dunkelgrau RAL 7027 for the cammo stripes.

Manny- by a lot of guys you mean me?[:O] Who else? I mean…I don’t have proof I’m the innovator of it’s use in Dio’s–I know I’ve heard of wall-filler (spakle)being used(especially in mixtures), but not wood-filler–As far as I know . It’s something I knew about from my woodshop. As far as clean-up–yeah cleans up with water before it sets and spreads like cake frosting–it’s just like Ed said as it dries–quite variable depending on thickness and such and alot like wood when it’s dry, being easy to sand, cut, carve, sculpt,drill,ect.

I’ve played with my share of cow pies as well…the best ones are when they are crusty on the outside for “no mess” pick-up, but still moist on the inside so you get a good spatter when it hits your opponent…

Build Resurrection: I finally finished the Horch Flak 38 conversion and was able to gathr the remaining pieces fo the Kublewagen at the IPMS show this weekend. I have really fallen head over heels for LifeColor paints during my trip through the desert. I have painted all three of the gun trucks with them and they are a wonderful Acrylic medium for weathering and chipping. Using the Hair Spray method is quite easy with these paints and they remain chippable until you seal the paint with a Flat finish.

I plan to apply the Tropical Tropen Scheme so I will paint the base color of the Kublewagen RAL 8020 Gelbbraun with a disruptive pattern of RAL 7027 Sandgrau which is a 1942 pattern. I will use Silly Putty as a mask and it should be fun and interesting!

I also happen to see this kit on one of the vendors tables and picked it up just for the utility trailer for $5.00. I buit it tonight and it is way cool!

i also picked up various Hornet heads to replace the Tamiya ones.

Here are some pics and stowage ideals of the litte trailer.

I have a little bit of progress with the Kubel and Edward PE set.
