This is the 2nd half of the vignette I’m doing.
Again a Verlinden 120mm knight. 13th c. Done pretty much the same way as the preceeding fig.
All thats left now is the base.

Great Job.
Just one nitpick, more of a personal dislike.
IMO, the folds of the clothing is shaded too much, i.e. too big a contrast.
OTOH, I have seen often what I call over-shading on many figure builds(mostly by western builders), may it be clothing, skin-tones, panel-lines, etc.
Like I said just my personal feeling which counts for nothing. [;)]

I would love to see a pic (if u have it) of the kit contents when you opened the kit. Does it require as much work as the 1/35 verlinden figures?

I can see your point. I’ve done them both ways in the past. Very subtle on the shading and also a bit exagerated. Both have different qualities that appeal to me. As you said, maybe its my western view of things. I think sometimes its is a matter of subject material as well as personal taste. Given the choice, the illustrator part of me comes out and I tend to use a little heavier hand when it comes to shading, it exagerates it a bit I know, but it makes it stand out and accentuates it in a scale sense. (I don’t know if I’m communicating my thoughts on this clearly enough, but the illustrators out there might know what I’m talking about) Thanks very much for the input. You get to see some great figure work over there. The Japanese are doing some superb work (although, I will say, I still think the British and the Spanish lead the pack for figure work) and I’m sure you get to see some fantastic pieces of art. So yeah, I’d say you can judge…[;)]
Plus I looked at several photos I have of myself and others on the tournament field and it seems that in those photos, there is a great deal of contrast in the folds of clothing. Maybe its the angle of the sun that day or the film development but it seemed right. I have two more of these figures from the same time period. I guess I could paint them using a more subtle shading technique and we can make a comparison.
Muzzleflash: The Verlinden figs were a pretty easy assembly. They came as head, upper torso, right arm, left arms, lower torso, right leg, left leg, rt & lft hand, sword, sword hilt, shield, ailettes, dagger, dagger hilt, lft & right spur shanks and a really nice base.
I have a few others that I’ll take pics of for you as they come out of the box.

Thanks, for your reply. I know I am a bit too critical at times, might come from living with an artist(Wife), she had her own Manga strip for 11yrs and also did a lot of work for other local artists when she was younger.

I have to agree that there is some fantastic stuff over here, and what I really like the artists over here are very easy approachable and open to other peoples opinion.
Met quiet a few of the big names in the Managa & Garage-Kit industry over here, never mind that I can also walk into many shops like Kiya Hobbies over here and see the Military dioramas featured in mags on display and talk to their builders.
FWIW, on the PC at home the shading does not appear to be that strong, more like we used to do D&D figures.
Either way keep up the good work.

I think you nailed the shadows, the chain mail looks perfect as does the rest of the metal work!!! If you don’t bring them to Atlanta with you, I’m gonna hurt ya!! [;)]

Hey, that’s pretty cool that your wife had her own manga. Do you have any links to some of her stuff?
FWIW on the shading, In my artwork, I like to go heavy on the shading to the subject stands out stronger, but that’s just a personal preference. I like my pics to be pretty stark. Take for example, my Iwo Jima pic, I like to be subtle on lots of areas, but I do want some strong contrasts there. I’d love to see some of your wife’s stuff.
