Tamiya 1/48th 109 E3 kit grafted with Werner’s Wings resin V13/14 racing conversion.
Nice kit, complete and comprehensive, reasonably molded.
On the advice of a smarter 109 guy than me, I filled the panel lines on the fuselage and made mods to the slats, including this.
From this. Real 109 slats don’t have either the locating tabs that can be seen or the huge lip on the top of the wing. Styrene strip fixed both.
The build went ok, typical modeling. But the paint…
The paint gave me fits. Very rough finish and I never figured out how to spray the Humbrol Wine Red how it liked. After a couple of strip and reattempts I gave up, cleared the heck out of it and moved on. To many models to build, to little time.
Floyd Werner has been terrific in helping me with the project and I wish I could have done the kit better justice. I hope to make it up with the next build.
If you are interested in racing planes or just want a distraction from all the drab war time paint give Werner’s Wings conversion a try. My next one will be the record breaking V13 and will include the kits vac canopy and streamlined spinner. Sure to be a good looking brother to this one. Many thanks to Floyd for the kit and the help.

It’s nice to see a 109 in a nice bright color. Sharp! You did a nice job getting that resin nose to fit. What was the reason for filling the panel lines on the fuselage? Was it done just to this particular aircraft?
This was a racer and I’ve been told the panel seams were filled to decrease drag, ala P-51 wings.
I questioned this myself until I saw a ref pic of the plane where some lines were clearly visible and others were missing and the skin was smooth.
Well done Troy, didn’t expect to see this one finished so quickly! Bummer about the paint troubles, but nice recovery anyway. I may consider buying one of these now, thanks a lot for lightening my wallet a little more buddy LOL.
On the advice of others I recoated the plane with another coat of Future. I used a brush and got it on heavy and it really helped the rough finish. The airbrush would have taken way to long and to many coats to equal this. Looks better!
