108, 109, 110

Messerschmitt, that is !

I started Eduard’s 1/48 Bf 108 for a customer, and ProModeler’s Bf 110G-4 for another. I wondered how the 108 would look parked next to an early 109, so I decided to start Classic Airframes Bf 109A kit.

Eduard’s 108 is the regular plastic kit to which I’m adding their PE set. There is more PE this way than there is in the ProfiPack kit (which I’ve already built for myself). This will be done in the desert scheme.

Classic Airframes’ Bf 109A is a sweet little kit. My PE instrument panel’s notch wouldn’t fit under the gunsight, so I had to carefully saw a groove underneath the site. This allowed the top to sit flush with the resin backpiece, but the area that contacted the sidewalls sat too low. I sawed notches in the sidewalls in order to get everything to sit flush within the completed fuselage. I added “hoops” to the rudder pedals, since that’s what they looked like in my reference pic. They didn’t appear to be regular leather straps.

I’m also building ProModeler’s Bf 110G-4 with Verlinden’s resin update set. This will be done in the same markings as the one I built earlier for myself, which is in the Luftwaffe Gallery on my website. Lots of surgery is necessary to add the engine, wheel well details, flying surfaces, and nose. Only the seats, stick, and ammo cans & guns (not yet added) are included for the cockpit. The rest is OOB.

I’m certainly getting my “Luftwaffe fix” with this project !

Those all look great! Excellent looking builds. The 108 is very interesting- I haven’t seen one of those kits before. Is that a fuel tank in the back seat?

When I saw the subject line for the post, I automatically thought “111, 112, 113”. LOL

The 108 is especially interesting. Is that a fuel tank in the back seat?

looking great, I love to see planes side by side - the comparsion between the sizes the details will be very interesting.

Fuel tank? C’mon, they’re German… you know it’s beer! [;)] [(-D]

The Fokker DVII model from your web site looks like an excellent model. Tell us more!

very nice start Pix. Like the subject.

Outstanding detailing, Pix! I personally would not want to ride next the the gas tank in the 108, and (I have to ask) is that tiny pistol in the rear compartment of the 110 for a last ditch situation? [swg] Your work never ceases to amaze me, I’d love to see you do a 1:48 B-58 or Bone! Thanks for sharing, I’ll be watching for the next update!

Thanks Jon, waikong, Antinice, Thad, Steve-O, smokinguns, Bud, and Brian !

Jon - yes, those are fuel cells in the backseat. They were added to some aircraft, and must have been essential in North Africa.

Antinice - the D. VII was built out of the box, using kit decals. I used steel wire for the bracing, and fine wire for the control cables. It’s a sweet little kit, and I highly recommend it.

Steve-O - it’s nice to have an early 109 available. This will be built as a late 109B-2 of JG 132. I just ordered a 1/48 resin Fw 190 V-1 (forgot who makes it), which will look good next to this one.

Brian - that’s a flare pistol on the rear seat of the 110. It’s casted to the seat, along with the paper and belts. I probably won’t be building any post-WW II aircraft, except for Hasegawa’s F-86F-40. I’m looking forward to that one (and I have a Legend resin cockpit for it).

Thanks again !
