Am starting a project to build aircraft from the pre-war Yellow wing era , first build will be a
SBD-1 Dauntless - base kit will be the Hasegawa A24B Dauntless - with the Starfighter decals cowling conversion.
Biggest problem is the lack of cockpit interior, so anybody got an idea to make it look better ( without scratchbuilding) True details aftermarket kit not suitable for this kit.
You should be able to use SBD-3 stuff as there isn’t too many significant cockpit differences between a USMC -1 and -3. You will have to modify the gunner’s -5 position as it uses a hatch for the gun(s) to be stowed.
Bending the thread a little, one of my favorite yellow wings planes is the Curtiss F11C/BF-2 Goshawk. I don’t recall any kits of it- did anyone kit that plane?
thanks to all who replied - seems i have to look for the Hi tech kit for the Dauntless upgrade as Hasegwa didn`t put much in the way of sidewall / cockpit floor detail.
I assume both the F2 Buffalo and the F3F3 Wildcat also had aluminium cockpit interiors
Don ? if your reading this - i think Monogram did the Goshawk / checkout Scalemates site
Hi Don - Starfighter Decals on line store carry both F11C and BF-2 kits in 1/72 based on the old Monogram kits. They include the kit with resin conversion and detail parts. He has them on sale right now. I can’t remember if they come with decals, but he has them for sale separately too I think. His resin stuff is good, and he ships promptly.
Here’s the trick with yellow paint: ALWAYS start with a good, smooth flat white primer. Make the areas solid flat white. Then I use Testor Model Master (enamel) “chrome yellow” which is glossy yellow built up in several light coats. Then let it cure for about a week before decaling or handling. That’s the ONLY way you can successfuly apply yellow. Here are two 1/72 Academy kits done up as an SNJ-3 from 1941 and a T-6G from the early 1950s:
Thanks your suggestion about painting Yellow , assume you are referring to spray painting the coats. Model Master paints not readily available here in the UK
Seems my thread has gone a bit mad , but still looking for ways to beef up the interior , with some sidewall detail . True Details not suitable for the kit build i have.
