1/72 XB-70 Decals??

Hi there folks,I’m an auto builder so I normally hang out at SA,but I have a very old built 1/72 XB-70 that I want to restore and I’ll need some new decals for it. I think it’s an old AIRFIX ? anyway since they only built 2 of them, I believe their was only one set of markings. Any suggestions on where I might find something??..Thanks bsoder

Nothing out there that I know of in the aftermarket product base.

Assuming you have enough color photos and visual references I would harvest insignia and lettering from unused decal sheets if you have them, or acquire the following products.

As for other markings that I’m not aware of or cannot be addressed by the aforementioned products chances are they are in black or red, or some dark color of which should be pretty easy to create using MS Publisher and printing your own decals. Just make sure you let the ink dry and you seal them with decal sealer (see second link)

There are no aftermarket decals for the XB-70 in 1/72. The one and only kit, produced by AMT/ ERTL in 1997, had markings for both ship #001 and #207.

Essentially, there are Stars and Bars in four places, US Air Force lettering on either side of the fuselage, USAF lettering above the starboard and below the port wings, and serials on the fins. there are plenty of pictures, on the web and elsewhere, to show what goes where.

Ship #001 had, for the latter part of its life, Yellow and blue NASA stripes on its tailfins, and blue NASA lettering on these stripes:

Additionally, there are red ejector triangles and yellow rescue signs around the crew compartment, and assorted red and black stripes in various places around the airframe. Again, consult the many pictures that are available.

I built the AMT kit some years ago. I think I still have the NASA striping and the Ship #207 serials in my decal bank. I can also measure the size of the various markings if you need. Let me know if you’re interested.

Hi Chris,thanks for replying…I have the built plane,but it’s been stored and the decals are flaking off(I never sealed em) and I need to strip it and repaint, replacing the stars&bars and U.S AIR FORCE are really no problem the NASA on the tail fins would be the trickiest…thanks again…Brian

I just checked; I do have the yellow NASA tail stripes (and a couple of NASA badges) in my decal bank. If you want, they’re yours.
