Here are some in-progress shots of a Monogram Classics Albatross I started this weekend. Not sure when the original kit came out (this one is from 1999), but it is a good one.

Its comimg along great, what scale is it?
I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but the kit is 1/72nd scale not 1/48th as you may have thought. I have one waiting to be built and I checked it out. One was rumored to in the planning by Revellogrm many years ago and I remember seeing a catalogue some years ago with one listed as being released which never to my knowledge came to fruition much to my regret as I wanted one so dearly. However, congrats on what is looking like a great build of this still good classic. Where were you able to locate Coast Guard decals for you model?
Looking great! An eye-catcher, for sure!
nice ! looks like an airplane with lots of character
Think you got your scale confused, but a nice start. If you did all of that in a weekend, when do you sleep? [:)].
Regards, Rick
First I thought that I misred, but when reading again I discovered I really had red right the first time. You did this in 1 (one) weekend ???
That is amazing.
I must say I never heard of this bird before, I like it [:D]
That build looks great Dan. Brings back memories of the early 60’s. I flew as a spotter one day in the Albatross, when instead of leaving RCAF base Trenton for the weekrnd I spent the days and nights playing bridge in the Barrick Block. I was assigned as a spotter, when I walked into the mess hall for breakfast. The pilots seemed to like the Albatross a lot.
I have an old 1/72 Monogram, Heritage Edition, that I will build one day if I can ever find the RCAF Decal Set for it.
Bill.
Very nice (quick) work. What a cool paint scheme !
Chris
Thanks everyone!
Splash and Rick, you are right about the scale…I goofed!
Dan
Nice work, boybuddho. Quick too! I built one of these Monogram kits back in the late 50s when I was a kid and another one a few years ago. I still have the 2nd one stashed in a box in the closet somewhere. I did both of mine in the USAF/ARRS scheme depicted in the box art. I spent 5 years in ARRS, so I kind of lean towards those colors. Great bunch of folks! [alien]
Hey, SALBANDO, you reading all this???
Hey, Dan -
That looks great. I like the CG livery - very eye-catching. It’s rotten bloody kit, and you’ve made it look good. Well done.
I’ve got one of those in the pipeline and want to do it in USN colors (circa 1960 - my dad was stationed in Bermuda and he saw them almost every day) - hope mine looks as good as yours.
Lima Charlie Yardbird.[:D]
I was able to snag one off of E-bay that I’m going to do in Arctic SAR markings like those stationed here in Alaska way back when. I’m also planning on scratch building the reinforced keel, outboard float skis and JATO kits on the rear mid-fuselage which were modifications for landing on the snow and ice. I’m still trying to find another one to do up as a USCG bird out of Kodiak.
Hey DK Macin,
I heard that the USN flew Albatrosses out of Kodiak as well. Know anything about that?
Lucky for me there’s an SA-16B parked up at Merrill FIeld in Anchorage. It’s all white with a very small amount of green trim and the Reg. Numbers make me think it’s own by Evergreen.
Evergreen’s also got an old H-3 up here as well. It’s an ex-HH-3F Coastie bird.
Sal,
I don’t know, I’ll ask my uncle. He was USN in Kodiak in the late50’s early 60’s. . .we used the same hangars when I was there in the early 90’s!
To show my age, I was a scanner in the HU-16E Albatross and was almost a dropmaster, but we switched AC to the ThunderPig and all was lost!!
Dan, Excellent paint job of a 60’s CG aircraft, again where did you get the decals?
Don
salbando -
Schiffer’s book “Grumman Albatross” by Wayne Mutza has a great shot of a USN bird at anchor. It’s in white over gray livery with standard yellow/black rescue markings, with BuNo 137920 and “Kodiak” in white on the tail. A smaller version of this pic appears in Squadron’s “HU-16 Albatross In Action”.
Not much, but it’s a start.
Dick
Don:
Not sure where he got his decals, however, here is a copy of a post I have over on the Helicopter page:
Hope it helps!
Thanks Everybody!
The decals are kit supplied and have two versions…the other was a USAF search and rescue scheme with an aluminum and yellow striped finish.
Heres some pics of the finished model:

Very nice, I like it a lot, The Coast Guard paint job its preety sweet. I have an C-130 H in my pile of planes, I want to painted in Coast Guard colors, how hard was to painted white and red? I heard that white color is the most dificult color to paint.
Thanks
ski
Dan,
Looking great! What did you use for the orange/red?
Don,
Thanks! Any info would be great.
Dick,
I’m hunting for the books as we speak. Not a lot of info on the web.
Thanks ski and salbando!
I used ModelMaster White enamel and Tamiya Gloss Red for the paints. The lighting makes the red look more like orange!
