I have a small collection of 1/72 scale WW II aircraft that I am working through…Some with photo-etched parts, nice molded in details, etc.
Some of them have molded in raised details: panels, rivets, etc. What are the chances that the rivet details need to go to be accurate to scale? Are the rivets too big?[?]
Second, I am wondering what kind of detail a 1/72 pilot would have: face, uniform, etc. I would be very welcoming to photos if you have some, but I am just wondering if we are talking about basic face color / unifrom color, or eyes, shading, etc. [banghead]
This question maybe a huge indicator at how new I am at this, but I love reading the forums. I have learned a lot and my job is nice enough to give me high speed internet to use to read the forums while I am not “working”.
It reminds me of a line from a movie…The consultant claims,“It appears that you have missed a lot of work lately…” The brave cubicle dweller replies, “Well, I can’t say I have ‘MISSED’ work…”
Anyway, I am eager to hear the experts chime in on this and probably need to go take some more Ridalin or something…[%-)]
Regarding the rivets in 1/72 scale, I’d have to say they would need to be practically non-existent at that scale. In my opinion they might be appropriate in 1/32 or 1/24th scale but perhaps not at 1/72. Keep in mind that with warplanes, speed was high up there on the list of critical factors. That being the case, many of the rivets were flush mounted and did not stand out proud from the aircraft skin.
I know a lot of kits from the 1970s and early '80s had rivet detail on them. I’d probably sand down the rivet detail. You could probably leave a hint of a rivet showing but not uch more than that.
The pilot figures in 1/72 are not much to look at - sort of a face, and the rest of the details are about the same. Maybe someone who is exceptionally talented could do a really great job on one, but to me it would be more trouble than it is worth.
echelmberg, your right…Purchased an airfix 1/72 Me 109. It’s practically covered in rivets. Lots of sanding and scribing!! If I remember correctly, I dont think the 109 had that much rivets anyway.
Most kits that i have built the rivets were OK, (Revell 1/72 kits are good). I think they would only be seen in the older kits, were detail was more important than realism.
