Here’s my third completion this year. It’s built from the RoG Black Thunder Tornado kit using the kit decals for a plane that was stationed at Holloman AFB. Don’t know how accurate this would be but I built her as a tired and dirty bird ready for the trip home. It’s basically OOB but I built a blanking plate for the intakes(since none was included) and copied the fans from another kit. Not too noticeable in this scale but you can see them at the right angle. The pivot points for the wing pylons would have never survived the build so I snipped them off and drilled the pylons, punched some discs to go inside the wings and inserted some straight pins to mount the pylons to. The pivots for the stabilators were flimsy too so I snipped them, drilled for some brass rod and put a piece of aluminum tubing through the fuselage. I completely screwed up the wing and fuselage walk decals and figured I’d never mask them to paint so I left them off. Unfortunately, the stabilator outlines were already on. Paints are MM Acryll and the camo was done freehand. I also used MM Acryll flat as the final coat and thought it turned out a little white. Excellent looking Tornado!

I like the way the flat clear whitened the flat black, it looks very realistic as flat black is the quickest paint to show sun & weather fade. If you never mentioned this i would have assumed it was part of the process you use to weather dark painted aircraft.

A good example of this is WWII Luftwaffe night fighters. Even in B+W there never is black but darker shades of gray.

Thanks SuppresionFire! I appreciate that. Most of what you see is weathering it’s just that the flat acrylic added a little white that I didn’t want. The dark camo is schwarzgrau, RAL7021/MM 4795, with a few drops of black added. After sealing the decals with Future I misted some MM enamel dark sea grey over the top side and went over the whole plane touching a brush wet with enamel thinner to different areas and letting the thinner run and wash down the paint in streaks. I sealed that layer with a little semigloss/Future mix and then sprayed some flat black enamel along the spine and top of the fuselage and then repeated the brush treatment. I thought it looked pretty good but the flat killed some of the effect. Next time I’ll seal it with Dullcote and maybe try doing the mist coats over that.

fantastic looking tonka must have massive range with that much fuel slung under it

That configuration is actually termed Ferry load as it would take almost 14 hours straight flying and a massive load of fuel to take it from the western US back to mainland Europe plus at least 2 tanks at a tanker aircraft as well.
