1/72 Multiple Lightning build

Here are my P-38s from different manufacturers. Interesting to build them simultaneously as I am able to compare the strengths and weaknesses of each the kits. Decals are from Microscale.

Academy - St. Louis Blues, 12th FS/ 18th FG 1945 Zamboanga, Philippines

Hobby Boss - Pacific Prowler, 44th FS/ 18th FG 1945 Zamboanga, Philippines

Italeri - Uncle Cy’s Angel, 80th FS/ 8th FG 1945 Mindoro, Philippines

Dragon - Almost “A” Draggin, 9th FS/ 49th FG 1945 Lingayen, Philippines

The newly completed Lightnings joined by the old builds.

Wow what a collection

Beautifully done, all of them. The only thing I like better than a P-38, is four of them. Thanks for the post and photos.

Thanks Tempestjohnny.

Thanks Patrick. I have decal sets for four more P-38s so I guess I’ll build four more.

Man, that’s an impressive group!

Thank you Mississippivol

What a great collection! Thanks for sharing. I’ve done 6 Spitfires from one squadron in the Battle of Britain and am hoping to do 6 Hurricanes from 303. I’d like to do P-38s but not sure I’d be able to get through 6 of them. So now that you’ve built all those kits, what are your thoughts on them? Which is the easiest build? Which is the most accurate representation?

Thank you Phil. I’d love to see your Spitfires. I enjoyed the multiple build and being able to finish them in a more or less common standard OOB. The easiest build is the Hobby Boss kit. Good fit, pretty good details in spite of low parts count. It is missing though the bullet-like scoops on the side of the booms and the antenna under the nose. Also the oval polished portion inboard of engine nacelles are represented as round clear parts. I just scratchbuilt the scoops and antenna and puttied off the hole for the round clear parts. The most accurate and most detailed is the Academy kit, that is after correcting the engine intakes. Their representation of the intakes is wrong. It is too big, wide and flat opening and wrong shape. I did a lot of sanding, cutting, puttying, and scribing to make them look right. Looking forward to your Hurricane builds.
