I have an idea for a project that would require about 10-20 German soldiers from WW2 in various walking and standing poses. Are there some kits like that around anywhere?
Can anyone recommend a particular brand to work with, or one not to work with? Any advice and opinions are greatly appreciated.
What period and season are you interested? Winter or summer and Early period of war or the Late one?
Kits there are, but you have to be a little more precise, and also do you want expensive or cheap sets?
I really am pretty flexible. I know there is a good range of tank kits in 1/72, so I can get one from almost any part of the war to match the figures. I also think that summer or fall would be easier than winter, just because I doubt there are many sets with the winter dress in them.
I know most of the time you get what you pay for. I have worked with some 72nd figures in some aircraft, and they are fairly easy to modify and correct, so a cheap set would be the best.
So I guess the short answer would be summer or fall, cheap kits, any time during the war.

Best sets for your purpose would be two Preiser sets namely German Infantry Advancing (72504) and Advancing Grenadiers with MG (72527).
Both sets are in hard palstic and you get 12 figures per box, so you will have 24 poses. They are multi part, coming also with a lot of gear and weapons, so a lot of space for conversions and interesting poses. You can mix parts from both sets, because the figures and equipment from both of them have the same size.
Poses from both sets are inspired from photos of the period depicting German soldiers in marching. Figures are dressed im M36 tunic, but you may use them without hesitation throughout all the WWII war. Some arms will have rolled sleeves, so the seasons should be spring/summer.
Next month I want to review these sets as well as two Warrior sets also portraying Germans walking, these are dressed in smocks.
That sounds pretty good. Are they readily available, or are they more difficult to find?
I do not know, depends on the country. In UK and US I think they are easiy to find.

1 as far as uniforms go you could do a little mixing in mid-late war the older guys had one uniform and the new recrutes/ replacements may have had another
2 mix brands of soldiers have advantages and dis advantages
disadvantages include diff plastics some hard some soft so diff paints sometimes are needed
advantages include some companies have unique poses that may work well for you
