Well, I finally finished one of my two F-111s. This is the Monogram EF-111A Raven in 1/72 scale. Its built straight from the box. I didnt sand off the raised panel lines, cause I wanted to keep original to the kit. Been a long time since I have built a model with NO modifications at all. Paint is a simple SAC grey/ blue-grey scheme [yes, there were a couple that had a blue-grey top.] I thought the cockpit on this one was much better than the hasegawa F-111E which is also on the workbench right now.
A couple notes- this is only my second a/c to which I have airbrushed the panel lines. Still fine tuning the technique, but I’m liking the results. this is also my first a/c in which I used Model Masters metalizers on the exhaust. I am VERY impressed. I used an acrylic jet exhaust overall, highlighted with burnt metal, enamel exhaust, and burnt iron. This is also the first time I used burnt umber oil paint for weathering. Anyway, hope you enjoy. Kinda on a SAC kick right now since I found my Great Uncles SAC patches from his uniforms. He retired from the USAF SAC as an E-9.
Great job on the “switchblade Edsel”. I can relate to your uncle’s service in SAC. I spent 16 years in Strategic Air Command in the early days of the USAF. All hail Curt LeMay
Really? I dont suppose you would remember a Chief Master Sgt. Harry E. Rockwell?
Anyway, thanks all. I’m basically using these “cheaper” kits as practice. I have 1/32 [2] F-16, F-18, F-4J that I’m not ready for yet. So I’m building myself up to them.
The name doesn’t ring any bells. In those glory days of SAC, there were many thousands of people scattered around a bunch of bases, so it would be pretty near impossible to know them all. I spent most of my SAC time at Dyess AFB, Abilene, Texas; Beale AFB, Marysville, California; and Andersen AFB, Guam.
Yeah. He spent the early days in Korea, then the remainder of his time was spent at Offut in Omaha. I have been to Dyess before they removed the B-1s, and I have also been to Tinker, where they sit now. My Great Uncle and my grandfather were both USAF. My Uncle was SAC, while my granddaddy was an AP at Marysville. I went Army instead. But we have family in every branch, every war.
