1/72 atlantian super vulcan

i actually think im a little bit unhinged!
in the late 70s the raf knew the last heavy bombers were coming to the end of their life. after the vulcan was retired that left the tsr2 is the main strike asset and would leave a gaping whole in the raf.
several designs were submitted in the end were put into full production an uprated supersonic vistor and a much improved vulcan .
the vulcans basic structure remained almost untouched due to the types inherent strength. the main differences were an all new nose and cockpit, completely revamped avionics and ecm, a new tail, and the replacement of the vulcan b2s olympus engines with the far more powerfull olympus engines as used in concorde and tsr2. this gave the super vulcan more than twice the power of the b2 which raised the top speed to nearly 1000 mph and allowed supercruise and also hugely reduced the already impressive take off roll. even more importantly raised the payload capacity to 38,000 lb
empty weight 92,000lb
max take off weight 224,000lb
thrust 164,000 lb

the massive increase in power coupled with the huge wing created an uncomfortable situation for any fighter intending to intercept the super vulcan at high altitude quite simply nothing could out turn it at altitude (some were even fitted with a cannon and sidewinders for close range air to air defence) and stand off attacks were very difficult due to the ecm carried

the atlantians placed an order for 35 super vulcans very early in development (already equipping substantial numbers of the jointly funded lightning f8 and the tsr2) and the 1st entered service in 1982

this is my 1st ever vac form kit and iv taken a razer saw to it!

iv got to make a new pointy nose fit and scratchbuild a cockpit (also a 1st for me)

bodging a pit together from whatever iv got to hand
blutacked the dash and seat atm the rest is glued

this is my 1st attempt at scratchbuilding a pit and 1st attempt at a vac form kit
the pit looks bare but im just not good enough to do really fine detail

it looks better than nothing though

I totally missed this one up until now. Very interesting idea, I will be following your build. What kit are you using as base for your project?

its called rare planes vac form iv never heard of them but saw the kit cheap on ebay because it had no pit and no canopy which meant it was perfect for my needs

a bit of unseen filling sanding etc gone on

this is a rough mockup

Yes, yes you are. Your mind has wandered too far from your body, the cavity left has been taken over by the spirit of an atlantian soldier who is amazed by all our fantastic new technology.

Im just kidding, but you are insane lol. Cant wait to see this one done.

after a year out im back in the mood to build stuff now

iv built some new intakes and got the nose fixed, iv also made a new tail for it heres whre im upto

how do i post pics now? lol

Holy wing area, batman!

yeh lol its a beast of an airplane.

back in the day when the vulcan played wargames with the lightnings and f15s the vulcan used to turn fight them at high altitude and WIN!!! lol

With that much lift area, I don’t doubt it.

I remember a Vulcan as child I was on my dads shoulders and we were waiting, it was at an airshow near Manchester and from behind the trees this behemoth came roaring towards us, it flew so low the ground shook I remember it clearly to this day. All the car alarms went off in the car park, and (this was before aircraft were banned from flying over crowds). It was an awesome sight! Followed afterwards by a Tornado F3 soaring into the sky, turning and accelerating toward the ground while continually rolling. I forget the rest but it was something I will not forget, I think here in Britain there is only one airworthy Vulcan now, but not sure.

Interesting build… Will be nice to see it finished!

there is its xh558 and this year is the last year it will be flying :frowning: iv never seen 1 and im desperate to get to an airshow

the pilot got a right bollocking for that but not because it was dangerous to the plane (it wasnt) its beacause he was making the fighters look stupid lol
