Wanted to show you peeps what came of my assembly line today. The academy 1:72 P40.
This is the third plane i have finished since i have started my airplane hobby and as such i am not entirely unsatisfied with it although it does have some flaws… Be gentle please[:I]
I really like these academy kits but i must say i am not as pleased with the decals as they are much thicker as the revell ones i am used to. They do not respond as well to microsol. Getting the sharkmouth in place cost me at least a half hour causing colourful language and a broken decal[:-^]. Apart from that i had great fun with it and imho thats what counts dunnit?[;)]
The pics:
For this last pic i just had some fun photoshopping it in sepia into a sky background. Yes yes, the spinner isn’t turning[angel], by no means professional or anything but it was fun to do though…
Ummm… this is the first time i made a serious attempt at weathering using my tamiya weathering set. How does it look to you guys? Overdone?
Oh wow, this means i am allowed to open a new box! Goodie goodie.[:D]
VERY nice job painting the canopy - very fine and crisp.
Since you asked - here are two suggestions that you can still use if you want:
you could probably blend that weathered area on the underside so that the fingerprint is less noticable. Depending on what kind of paint you used, and how long the paint has had a chance to cure, that operation shouldn’t be too hard.
One thing that looks a little strange is that you’ve weathered around the shell ejection chutes, but the ejection holes themselves are still light blue. I usually try to fill them with a dark grey or black so they look like holes.
Very nice job though ! It’s almost like the P-40 was made for a shark mouth.
You’re really crankin’ these things out Kermit! They’re looking better every time!
I agree with the suggestions made by Chris… also his comment on your canopy work. Great job! [tup]
What are you using to paint your models with (airbrush, spray can, etc) and what did you use for a clear coat? I’m no expert, but the only advice I can offer is to practice your painting and try to get a smoother texture on the model.
With that, I say “keep it up”! Your 3rd build looks better than my 10th did. I’ve been doing this for almost ten years now and I still can’t deal with 1/72 scale… too small!
Thanks to everyone for their time and interest! These aircraft are really fun to do and i think i will do some more[8D]. The roughness of the paintwork is mostly caused by my inexperience with the airbrush and the fact that i have to use cans of compressed air to use it (dont have a compressor YET) making the pressure hard to control.
I don’t think i am a faster builder than anyone else, i just work on several projects at the same time. If one plane is drying up or something, i just work on number two and so on[;)] Especially these little 1:72 kits are perfect for that imho.
I do the majority of my paintwork with the revell aqua color acrylic paints and fall back on occasion on revell or humbrol enamel if a certain colour is unavailable. Weathering is done with the tamiya weathering set B (snow, soot and rust).
Funny you guys should mention the canopy. because it was so tiny and hard to mask in one go i did it in parts by handbrushing them. First masking for instance the horizontal bands and then the vertical ones etc. etc.) Glad you like it !
Not sure what the next one will be as i still have to start it, but i also still have to finish up a russian I16 that is causing me headaches[:D]
Forgive me for my belated response to your advice about the holes on the underside…[:I]
Ofcourse you are right! Quite frankly it did not pass my thought for a single moment to colour them. Your observation is very welcome and i will ofcourse correct that on the model. Thanks![#toast]
Great job Kermit, another fantastic build. There are a few odds and sods that need attention but its not too late. If you keep listening to the great advice given in these forums, I know Im still learning still from everyone here, youll be producing show stopping models in no time. Keep em coming Big boy.
Ofcourse i welcome any and all comments! I have actually expected the “pro’s” here to be much more critical. Hearing all the comments and advice sofar has really made my day. To hear one say wow and fantastic all the time makes one lazy imho. Critic is good to receive if well given[;)]
And i do love what you are doing on your P51 by the way. A joy to watch and follow.
