This might be included in an already existing topic, but I think it is important enough to have one on it’s own.
Last week I got two Amphibious ships, the Wasp class LHD-4 USS Boxer from Revell/Monogram, and the LST-4002 Shimokite from Tamiya. Both ships are in 1/700th scale, and both come with various helo’s.
This is my problem. As I also design my own ships, I thought that having a few built models of 1/700th or 1/350th helo’s would be helpful in determining the size of the flightdeck and elevators. Well… It doesn’t…
The CH-53’s and the V-22’s coming with the USS Boxer are so out of scale that they shouldn’t be called 1/700th in the first place.
I checked with various sites, and the CH-53 has a rotor diameter of about 30 meters. This would calculate to 43 mm in 1/700th, right? Wrong!! The rotor onf the Revell model is only about 30 mm in diameter!! This would calculate to about 21 meter in real life…
Now, okay, I understand that it might be difficult to model helo’s and aircraft in such a small scale, but other manufacturers such as Tamiya have no problem with this…
I know that JAG Collective has very good looking V-22’s, SH-60’s and Boeing JSF’s included with it’s kit of a future Stealth aircraft carrier. When you see a built model of one, you can hardly believe that it’s only in 1/700th scale…
I’ll contact them to ask if they’ll also plan on sell these planes seperately from the ship. I think many modelers would applaud this!!!
I also hope for Tamiya to produce the LCAC’s included with the LST seperately. This would make for very interesting options for diorama’s!![8D][8D]
BTW, one big problem with the USS Boxer is the lack of LCAC’s… For a ship that was especially designed to accommodate the new Hovercrafts, this is a very serious downer. Sure, there are small boats to ferry marines to shore, but where are the LCAC’s??? A real shame, Revell…
BTW, the LCAC’s included with the LST-4002 look fantastic!!!
