1/6 brit glider pilot , holland 17 sept. 1944

well, heres a 1/6 figure i recently completed- yes it’s a battle-barbie, but hopefully up to f.s.m standards… head sculpt repainted, ‘glider pilot helmet’ scratchbuilt from sculpey (also mustache), body armour scratchbuilt, and the uniform and pretty much everything else weathered, washed, drybrushed , detailed, etc., etc…

hope you enjoy, all comments, sudgestions, critiques welcome.

cheers,

rob

anybody?

very nice, I especially like the scar on his face.

thanks, tacobuff!

What paint do you use for your figure’s faces?
This guy kinda looks like my uncle. LOL

i did the repaint using the factory paintjob as a base ( the thought of trying to paint eyes terrifies me at this point…) over that i use a glaze of thinned liquitex matte clear acrylic medium with a tint of burnt sienna acrylic mixed in (very thin), mostly flowing it into the creases and details. for the mouth i do the same but useing a very pale red, and maybe just a hint on the cheeks and ears. once the acrylic is dry i use ‘future’ floor wax to give the eyes and lips/inside of mouth a wet look. master 1/6 modeler tony barton has a tutorial on this method on some of the 1/6 scale forums, and his work is light years better than mine (lol), but i’m learning! i like the translucent look the acrylic glaze gives.

When you weathered the uniform did you give it that real dusty look? Nicely done.

thanx, chris!

sanded the smock with fine grade paper, then drybrushed and sanded again to fade and soften the cloth and highlight the edges - wasnt going for dusty, just a well worn look like pictures of old dennison smocks- that camoflage faded and blended rather quickly.

Ah, that makes sense, it’s especally apparent on the back, good job!

thanks, chris- it’s really just alot of trial and error, figuring out what works…

i’ve got some ideas for inprovements to his gear that would add to his scale detail, i just have to get working on them. do you have any work posted?

cheers ,

rob

I’ve got a few kits that I’ve finished, most of my stuff consists of half done armor models.

This is my latest work, I’m a college student so I have little time, most of the work on that post was done durring my winter break. That’s 1/16 scale. My avatar is a 1/35 figure I painted, I recently took a new picture of it as the older picture was taken before I knew how to adjust the white balance settings.

This is my latest armor build I’ve finished, other than that I’m sorry to say most of my other projects are works in progress. I’m thinking I’m going to start moving away from after market parts and update sets and go back to out of box builds as they… more or less after painting look the same and go together quick, I’m also starting to get better at scratch building.

Hey, the dude looks kind of like Thomas Sullivan Magnum from Magnum PI. The figure and base look really great, specially the helmet. I have a lot of Dragon 1/6 scale figures and thought about ‘tuning’ some of them up a bit. Is he free standing on the base or is he attached?

Good show, ol’ chap! Strictly top shelf! (hehehe)

Seriously though, very nice work! I really like your work on the face, mustache and helmet. How’d you make the body armor? It looks factory made! You must have a tiny sewing machine or more patience than me.

plastickjunkie-

boots and base have holes drilled thru them, and brass tubing anchoring the figure to the base.

thanx for the comments! i never really noticed the ‘magnum’ resemblance, but now that you mention it…

‘tweaking’ and detailing the figs is the part i enjoy most, looking at the figs more as a model kit waiting to be detailed, painted , and weathered, just in a bigger scale than 1/35. take the plunge, you wont be sorry!

cheers,

rob

thanks, senojrn!

the body armour was made of sheet styrene for the armour plate, covered with adhesive athletic tape and then painted. the straps are cotton tape purchased from tony barton then painted. the buckes were from the brit photoetch set by rich elbourne, and the the fasteners and hooks at the sides of the main front plate are one-offs also by rich elbourne. it really wasnt that hard, once i got the metal parts…no sewing at all.

pip pip, stiff upper lip and all that rot!!

cheers, rob

WOW, your work is very well done! As I said before, but your scratchbuilt body armor doesn’t look scratchbuilt; it looks like it was made by the company who manufactured this figure! Again, very nice! [tup][tup]

dragon did a set of ‘mre’ body armour, included with one of it’s ‘para’ sets and at least one figure, but theirs just didnt cut it. instead of rigid ‘plates’, it was ‘stuffed’- soft and flexible- and the fittings were not just minimal, they were wrong. so i decided to see if i could do better

thanks for the praise, all i can say is that i’m learning with every figure and that i’ve learned alot from people on the 1/6 forums (the sixth division, the sixth army group, and one sixth warrior) whose stuff shows how far i’ve got to go. if you dont know their work already, check out tony barton, boot25, vettius64, pvt skwerl, zuno, darkner imperator, and others who post on the forums. also there are small companies like newline minatures and battlegear toys that make custom boots, uniforms and gear for the best detail and realism. it’s a helluva hobby, and can be a very expesive addiction (i’ve even heard the phrase ‘plastic crack’ lol).

cheers,

rob

Great work Rob, the face is very well done. I love the subject matter.

Pat

thanks, pat!
