This is “Hell-er” 1/50 Piper L-4. It is a very basic kit. The fabric texture is extremely rough ,even the decals had a hard time to stick down but still an interesting subject.
The L-4 was a conversion of the Cub for military purposes. While there were a number of changes, including the main spar and the greenhouse, it still shows its Cub ancestry.
On all the J3 and L4 I have worked on the main spars (be it wood or metal) attatched to the front “carry through” tube where the inverted V “monkey bars” join. The main spars extend bejond the wingroot by about just over a foot. They may bave gone metal spars for strength but the basic layout is alomst identical
My understanding of the spar mod was to enable liason pilots to take extreme avoidence maneuvers in case of enemy fire. My Dad’s CAP squadron had one, and he took me up and really wrong it out. Regular J-3 was not approved for aerobatics.
