Picked the kit up at a show recently and got a pretty good deal. Just wondering if any of you have built the thing, and if so, what are your opinions of the kit? I’m sort of looking forward to starting it. I plan on building it wings level, not folded. I also understand the entire cockpit is supposed to be flat black, but in order to be able to see it, I think I’m going to try some contrasting grays, etc.
I think I have a fetish for contra-rotating vegematics (I picked up the 1/72 Trumpeter Bear at the same time…)
Haven’t built the kit, but as far as painting the cockpit, you might consider using something like RLM 66 or Polly Scale’s Grimy Black (or similar). They’re actually very dark gray, but I think they look very good, and give the oppurtunity for both lighter and darker accents. I’ve used them for IP’s and was very pleased with the results. Some folks refer to it as “scale” effect… personally I just like the results. [;)]
If you put a small drop of Future in each instrument dial, it really “pops”. The contrast is nice.
Hope that helps! Be sure and post pics of your progress- that looks to be an interesting kit.
Have one in the stash, but haven’t built it yet. Looks like a very nice kit & has got pretty good reviews. I use ModelMaster Interior Black for the interiors on post war British a/c, which is a very dark grey. With a little dry brushing of a slightly lighter grey, you can bring out some of the detail.
Just wanted to second what JWB said about the Polly Scale paints. I like to use PS’s various shades of black to “break up” and add variety to all black cockpits. I think in my stash I’ve got their Grimy Black. I think they also have something like an “Engine Black” or something like that. See if you can locate a train store in your area. Normally trains put me to sleep but they’ve got some great hobby supplies! Polly Scale makes a few more shades other than what I mentioned above. I know I have them. I just can’t remember what they are but they sure do make an all black part far less boring. Also, gotta love that water clean up and one bottle will last you a long, long time.
