1/48 tamiya Thunderbirds F-84G

Has anyone seen this kit? How does the metal plating look? I’ve seen the Mig-15 kit released with this metal finish too.

I’ve only seen the MiG kit and It looks kinda OK; only thing is the plating is kinda thick (on the few that I’ve seen) and tends to soften up some of the detail, especially in the cockpit.

You could probably try and strip it although I’ve never tried to strip the plating and dunno what would work well. I’m sure someone has a good answer to that…

Fade to Black…

Are you talking the usual “chrome” the makers put all over the car model parts to make them appeal to the under 5 set?
Check out the links under cars and you’ll find as many answers to the question as you can stand. I myself have switched from household bleach to Simple Green. You can try the others, but Simple Gren seems to remove even the bio hazard stuff they put on the AMT lits now.

lplanch,

Do yourself a favor and strip that chrome off. I mistakenly purchased their chrome P-51 instead of the “regular” one. I figured “What the heck? I’ll give it a try.” I just didn’t like it. I think from a distance it looks okay but when you get up close it really does look sort of toy-like. I’m sure someone with more patience and creative skills can really turn it into something neat but the chrome seemed to be just a bit over the top for me. I’ll bet if (and this may be just in my own little fantasy world) Tamaya ever decided to make some of those slick Reno racers then their chrome finishes would be pretty cool!

There are also sprue attachment points & seams to clean up. Since any flaws are highlighted on a NMF, touching it up could be very noticable. There would also be the matter of applying & sealing the decals. Seems to be more trouble than painting, but that’s just my opinion. Good luck, whatever you decide to do !

To strip the chrome plating, soak the model overnight in water with bleach (i didnt measure how diluted it was but i recall i put VERY little of it.—like the amount in a bottle cap). I did this on the plated pieces of my Naboo Starfighter kit. It worked GREAT!!!
