1/48 Tamiya P-51D Final Pics

Here is a photo of my 1/48 Tamiya P-51D. I’m almost finished with it. I have a couple more decals to put on (drop tanks and scoop). Tomorrow I put on the exhaust, landing gear and propeller. Oh, and I’m using some Micro Set to try to get the left wing star insignia to settle down over the raised detail by the aleron.

looks really good espins 1 can tell you have been doing them for a while. like i have said before the 51 isn’t in my top ten of best plane but like the spit eveyone else seams to like them alot [tup]

Looking good. What paints were used?

Looks great Scott. Getting the deal don around the aileron can be a bear. I took me 4 or 5 apps of Solva-Set in that one spot to really hug that thing.

Very nice work. Decals and finish look great.

Hey guy,

Great job. One of my favorite subjects. I have two of the same kits in my stash. I’m hoping they turn out half as good as yours. Nice finish

Thanks for sharing

Nice looking finish, I hope the decal settles down for ya.

Looking good Scott, nice work.

Regards, Rick

Very, very nice, Scott. I’m looking forward to seeing her finished.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I’m still a bit of a noobie to modelling. That P-51 is only my second aircraft model I’ve completed since getting back into the hobby about a year or so ago (after a long 20+ year hiatus). It’s also my first metal finish ever, so I’m please with these results, but want to try Alclad II on the next BMF project.

For the paint I just did what the directions called for. I use exclusively Tamiya Acrylics and did a 1:1 mix of X11 Chrome Silver and XF16 Flat Aluminum. I wound up doing 2 coats as there were a couple of spots where the texture wasn’t quite right. I was surprised at how incredibly well the decals worked on the bare paint, that says a lot for the Tamiya paints. The decals are typical Tamiya so they are a bit thick, but in this case that’s a good thing.

The insignia star on the left wing is going to take repeated applications of decal solution to hunker down. I know it will settle down eventually (after going through similar process Tamiya’s F4F Wildcat to get the insignia to settle down over all those beautiful rivets! That kit will be done sometime next week.

I’m going to finish up the decals tonight. I managed to smuggle my Mustang, decals and a few other tidbits out of my den this morning as I won’t be able to walk downstairs for the next couple of days. Our hardwood floors are being refinished downstairs, the poly-eurothane goes on today (2 coats) and another tomorrow.

It’s looking really good- nice job masking the nose. And the metal finish looks really good. Did you post any pics of the interior earlier? Love to see those!

I think I have some, but never posted them. When I can get access to my den later this week I’ll see if I have them on my digital camera. I was worried about masking that nose because of the curve just before the exhaust but it was actually pretty easy. Tamiya tape is the best stuff ever for masking! Very easy to work with. [:)]

She looks good.

Yes I agree its looking good. A very clean build. I like it.

Nice Job!

Looking great!

…wait a minute…

You came over and stole my P-51!

They must be long lost twins[8-]

[(-D] Our Mustangs look exactly the same! [:O] [(-D] I’m curious, what paints did you use for your BMF? [:)]

I used alclad aluminum with a base coat of just future. I used to use the alclad black gloss primer, but it never dried well for me and was a pain in general. Using just future as the base coat produces the same results for me without the hassles.

Alclad is pretty easy to use, just make sure and use a mask and build up light coats. Surface prep beforehand is very important too. Any dust/dirt or stray hairs can ruin a finish.

That wing insignia caused some worries for me too, but like you said it eventually snuggles down with some setting solution.

That’s a great looking build for being #2. Looking forward to the finished pics[tup]

I literally just need to glue on the landing gear, and was going to do that last night but ended up spending almost the entire evening troubleshooting my DSL connection, until we finally narrowed it down to an issue with my wireless router… sigh… there’s always something that gets in the way of the fun stuff.

Anyway, I was hoping to do an Alclad II finish on mine, but had to take a short cut as I ran out of time and used Tamiya Acrylics which turned out better than I expected.

Thanks for the tip about using future instead of the Alclad gloss black. Did you use their primer too or another brand?

I had used alclad’s gloss black primer. Maybe it was poor surface prep on my part, but I got a large section of the gloss black that went on sort of bubbly and flat (as opposed to glossy) on a P-47. Plus the alclad gloss black stayed sticky and never really felt dry. I ended up sanding the area and applying future over the entire plane, then went on with alclad aluminum. On my latest, the P-51, I just went straight to the future and avoided the whole issue.

Swanny has a great write up on using krylon gloss black paint for a primer too.
