G’day all, just a query on detailing a MKVIII spit with all the extras and resin parts you can think of, from gun bays and cockpit photo etched stuff, because I’d like to take a step up from out of the box, and the kit I’ve found is very detailed for out of the box but I want more, I can’t remember the kit maker, I’ll have to post it later, but I want to put together some options, plus, I want it to represent a MKVIII from RAAF 79 squadron, I know one of the pilots and wanted to make his spit. so colour schemes and mix will be important, i don’t know what colours the Australian spits had for that era and theatre.
Spitfire King: depends which location. The MkVIII’s came to 79 Sqdn in Australia from the Mid East, so they wore RAF Dk Earth/Mid Stone over Azure, with RAF Sky spinners. After arriving in Morotai, the Mid Stone was overpainted RAAF Foliage Green (FS 34092), but retaining RAF Azure. Some 79 MkVIII’s also wore a white empenage & a green (poss med green) spinner.
There is some controversy about exactly what colour these Spitfires were. Suggest you get a back issue of Model Aircraft Monthly January 2006 which has a lengthy article on this subject http://www.sampublications.com/
Thanks guys, I have a lot of detailed photo’s of 79 squadron from a doco i have been working on for the last 5 years, in particular the MKV’s. However its the MKVIII of Norm Smithells, on Morotai, with the white tail and dark spinner that I want to make. In the scheme of things, what tamiya paints or other companies make the colours required for the generally accepted version of RAAF 79 paint schemes?
Thanks Johnno, they’re looking into it now for me. As for the extras, any suggestions? five spoke resin wheels, flaps, spinner would be a rotol fourblade prop, with (was it brass edges?) and south pacific RAAF figures, anyone know if they’re out there, or would I have to retro fit some 1:48 figures?
photo etched cockpit kits? seats etc
Gun bays? is there a decent 20mm hispano 1:48 out there, ammo belts etc etc. look forward to your ideas, and I’ll go to the local hobby shop and order em
